Guitar talk

There is a new crop of guitarists out there who just smoke! Unfortunately they play in bands with a types of singers I just can't stand. Yellers(I've heard its now called Extreme singing-whatever) and death vocals. Grates on my nerves to no end.

I agree with you about the vocalists...who are some of the guitarists you are refereing to?

It's like "Wow...cool...yeah, ok...again?...come on...yeah, you're great, but can I remember or hum the solo?...no"

you said it right there...can you hum it, not just for solos though, i believe if you cant hum the song, its shit. i just read a review of HATE ETERNAL (which i think is great) and the reviewer said it best, something along the lines of "ya you can play a million miles an hour, but no one is impressed anymore" metal these days (at least from the american standpoint) has lost its desire to be catchy and to just be more intense than the last band. but if you can combine both, youre god.

Exactly...everyone loves hard and fast metal, but it needs to be melodic and have some lyrical content...I mean, shit...you can't even understand the lyrics. It's like what happened to Pantera...they were so intent on being more heavy with each release, that it made the music suffer...Cowboys From Hell and Vulgar Display are awesome, but after that, forget it. Just my opinion, of course, but that's the direction metal is going too. One exception is 3 Inches of Blood...that has a lot of NWOBHM roots. :puke:

3 inches is great, i dont like pantera tho. i personally dont really care if i can understand the lyrics or not. im more for the actual music myself, i find myself forgetting alot of my favorite bands lyrics, but i know the music note for note. im the type of nerd that dissects the music untill its a pile of parts on a table.

I used to only care about the guitar, but as I've aged and matured and become a metal geezer, I like to look at the whole composition and not just focus on on aspect...that what makes a great band...great songs.

the way it goes for me for a new band/album/song is first i listen to the drums, then the production, then guitars then vocals...UNLESS the vocals are so horrendous that i cant get past them, and that usually goes for all that emo screamo wannabe metal hardcore crap that they always play on the metal station on music choice.

I'm still searching for a saviour.
Dude, thats a job for you and me. The scene needs to change to get rid of the linkin parks and the staineds in this world . Shit even slipknot had a few leads on their last record, now I dont like them but they are starting to understand that this shit is coming back (guitar hero) and they are putting their two cents in.

Off topic, Me and my wife have started booking and promoting bands here in richmond which means bands that normally wouldnt have a chance in the scene here, are going to get the opportunity to get their shit out to the masses. So I wont be doing my part by playing anymore, I am going to leave that to the younger guys.
On a exciting note..... Tonight at Ally Kats Gwar will be playing, I love Gwar, and I got the opportunity to work for the club setting up the stage and helping them set their shit up. This is just as good as when my band opened for Six Feet Under...

on the topic of gwar (in my top 3 favs of all time) just a quick FACT, they are probably the most underrated band in the world. all you hear about is their fucking stage show, never the music. the music that i feel blows the fuck out of a lot of metal bands. did you hear war party and violence has arrived for christs sake? all the side bands too. i love dbx/ x-cops/ and their first band death piggy.

Some of the bands I don't even know. A guy I work with burned me a cd with a bunch of bands but did not write down who they were. I know Shadows Fall was one but I don't know which song. I liked a lot of the riffs and solos but the singers just ruined it. TO me it just makes it unlistenable.

OH, BTW Into Eternity is good example, I saw them at Pogpower last year, good music they did have a singer. But then the guitarist starts singing in death vox style on most of the songs. Completly turned me off.

my top 3 for me go...

slayer
dismember
gwar

I'm old school...I love Priest, Dio, UFO, MSG and early Scorpions, Motorhead but I like a lot of thrash too...Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera...I like Mercyful Fate and King Diamond...I just love good heavy music. I was lucky to be able to see a lot of groups when they were just starting out...I saw Metallica when they were kids...I saw Venom who were awesome live...Yngwie with Alcatraz. I saw all the big ones, Raven, Saxon, Accept, Anvil, Riot...you name it. The early 80's was a very cool time for metal. Oh, yeah...don't forget Thor.

I have seen the DBX like 12 time already, when they arent touring with GWAR that what they do , play ever little shitty dive in Richmond, I hear what your saying about them being underrated, but when you dress up in costume, bring a 40` ryder with nothing but props on it and dump 100 gallons of liquid on the crowd, thats what you are known for.
Meeting all those guys was the best last night, THey played their show and had a tribute to Dimebag, and after they were all done , they came back for an encore without the costumes, everyone had their little gwar g-strings on ....except brockie who decided that since it was a 18+ show he would do it naked. What a crazy fuck, the last time he did that it was an all ages show and Gwar got banned from playing richmond for like 7 years, but after the show he exsplained how he hates playing here in richmond because the venues are to small. cant blame the guy there .

a few years back i went to the gwar-b-q, at the slave pit, it was cool as hell. brockie is one of the funniest people on the face of the earth, and andrew dice clay being up there with him of course.

schenck-im with you on the old shit too. except saxon, theyre gay. they might as well call metal mania on vh1 classic the saxon hour.

and fuck eddie trunk.

Yeah, gas...I said I saw them...not that I liked them...they are gay. I certainly don't like them anywhere near as much as your little sister's tits...young, sweet and yummy...if you can pull dad off of them long enough for a little nibble.

A lot of the old stuff sucks too and is very dated, but it was a very exciting time for metal and I'm glad I was there for it.

I'll give GWAR another listen...I know War Party.
