guitar tone.. advice/help

more metal, more booze!!!
hey guys, after posting my demo tune the other week, alot of you said about my fizzy guitar tone (which as much as i agree with ya, i prefer it in that sorta music i was mixing, all personal preference though)

ive just tracked this, just need some opinions on where to start with it or pointers for emphasis on certain frequency ranges (ive eq'd it slightly, done my usual slight compression of 2:1 and about -6 to -8 threshold to smooth em out dynamically without taking away too much of the original dynamics and rolled off from around 10-11 k onwards)

(the playings sloppy as i did it real quick)

EDIT:
a full mix with drums and bass done pretty quickly, i prefer the guitars in tonetest 3

This sounds nice by itself but we really cant tell you anything until we hear it in a mix. Do you have a version with drums or drums and bass? By the way, the playing is pretty good. I'd like to hear what not sloppy sounds like from you.

ill try and put sum drums and bass to it this avvo/evening, it sounds alot different to my old guitar sound though.

im running my custom yamaha pacifica:

into a Peavey XXl head, into a standard Marshall 1960A cab, close miced with one SM57, just off centre (pointing at the join between the cone and dust cap)

I was actually recording the cab in my room (bad i know but i cant be arsed to haul it out of my room for when im coming up with ideas) and im using a MOTU 828mkII interface

This is a good sound actually. :headbang: My initial guess was a 5150. I like the second one, it sounds more natural, the first sounds thin and farty to me. I wouldn't change anything, the second one sounds awesome. Besides, if you mess with something too long, it gets worse ;)

I listened to the 3 clips above again with my headphones on, and i can say it's just awesome !

the 1st guitar only clip is awesome. You saying it was sloppy playing sounds like you're kidding us or something :).

Then the 2d clip sounds badass.

But the last one sounds even better. The guitar tone is fatter but has the same clarity.

This is definitely a badass guitar sound you have here (and i'm pretty sure your tight playing has a lot to do with it), one of the best i've heard on this forum so far.

If it was me i wouldn't change anything (i'm talking about the guitar sound in the 3rd clip)... just record an album right now :)

cheers!!! (rock) ive beefed the guitar sounds up a bit now, just added a bit more umph around the 250hz range. yeah the guitars on their own sound good, not as good as the 3rd clip, but at least i now have a starting point for future mixes!!:kickass:

and i was being serious about my playing, in places i duff up the notes as i only did it quick so once i actually finish writing the song ill redo the guitars properly, cranking me amp to get a better tone out of the cab
