Hammers of Misfortune...anyone? PPUSA MATERIAL...!!!

What the hell are you talking about?
Once again, completely irrelevant.....

You are trying to imply that you know about doom because you think more well known bands like Amorphis and Katatonia are doom, which they are not.

Dude who cares? My point is that you're trying to hard to cherrypick nonsense to justify a ridiculous argument. We like what we like, we don't like what we don't like. Yes, I agree that in the case of Dragonforce, there was an effort being made on the part of Roadrunner to get them on Ozzfest and get them in Guitar Hero, but to say that Dragonforce was nothing before that is INSANE. Hell, Dragonforce had scores of fans as early as 2001/2002 when they gave away their music for free on the internet and that led to them to get signed to Sanctuary (a major label imprint) for Europe.

People like what they like. You'd be surprised as to how people don't give a damn about what they listen to despite how hard you try to sherlock a conspiracy theory to piece together how a group of people could like a band that you don't. If you don't like them, that's fine. Shit, I can't stand Nightwish and Amaranthe have expressed that many times, but people like them. A buttload of people. I may have said my opinion on how the latter act may not be as successful as others were hoping them to be (I was 100% wrong there), but I never try to quantify why people like a band I don't like. People just are going to like what they like. Deal with it.

I mean let's be real. Take a step back. What do you, as a human being really care about when a bunch of people like the same band you like, but not at the exact same time as you discovered them? What does it matter that you're not going to get credit for being the taste-making savior of Hammers Of Misfortune, or Electric Wizard, or whatever? Who gives a shit dude. People like the same band you do, why can't you just be happy about that? Why do you (and others) have to belittle people just because they got into a band later or decided that maybe they really do feel Glenn is a tastemaker to them?

Think about it next time you post like that. You're basically saying: "HEY MAN, I LIKED THAT GROUP OF AUDIBLE WAVEFORMS THAT ONLY HUMAN BEINGS CAN APPRECIATE BEFORE YOU DID. IM COOLER THAN YOU." Doesn't it sound silly?

I hate this argument so fucking much! The only time in my life I have ever been influenced by other people for the music I enjoy was in the beginning when my Uncle introduced me to Black Sabbath, Rush, etc. I took it and ran from there. I don't like being lumped into a category...just because I happen to like something that someone has deemed to be hot with the hipster crowd doesn't mean I am a follower. I like what I like and I dislike what I dislike. Music has been and always will be a personal thing. This whole high and mighty preaching from the metal pulpit is really tiresome.

Sorry if I am coming off that way. I won't speak for anyone else.....

I too like what I like and dislike what I dislike.
I don't care if a band is hip or not. I fully admit to loving the Sword, for example.

You can not deny though that there are MANY people who only like bands of certain genres of which fit some sort of social acceptability (IE - the band is popular, praised by the masses, appeared at a fesitval they attended, etc, etc).

How was I cherrypicking???
You made the statement that I generalize doom metal around 4 or 5 different bands. I countered your examples by correcting the fact that they are not doom.

Yeah, of course peeps are gonna like what they like and dislike what they dislike..........

You can not deny the fact that mass public acceptance does make some bands to "some" (once again, not specifically callin anyone here out), more acceptable........

I think this would be a good argument if you were talking about a broader spectrum of people. I knew a guy who wouldn't think a band was worth his time unless they got radio play. I don't think the people in this forum are like that.

Also, I don't remember seeing this band mentioned on this forum, but I'm still new. I think they sound good and I'd see them live.

You're correct on that front. I can't deny that. But I also don't care. Neither should you.

I agree with AeonicSlumber and disagree with Jasonic. My agreement with AeonicSlumber is a general one.
My disagreement with Jasonic is just the point about people only liking bands after they become socially acceptable. This is maybe true with the large mainstream music consumer base (as noted by DuchessofDork) but that's outside the scope of this thread. My experience points to the OPPOSITE being the case. If anything, it's more like people like bands UNTIL they become socially acceptable. Which, of course, is equally irrational, except that in many cases you can make a real argument for bands' quality and artistic focus devolving as their popularity increases (see Edguy).

It's because he thinks people only like bands like this if Glenn likes them.

Actually, I had no clue Glenn liked them. I first heard about them through the "Mean Deviation" book, which got me curious (amongst other bands) to listen to their material on YouTube. Thought they kicked ass. Then the new album came out, liked the track above and bought the album.

Actually that's the thing I get the least about this entire thread. JGolden was crying about Hammers because he thinks everyone jocks bands only when you do, but have you even said anything about HoF in the entire history of this forum? I could be wrong but I don't remember it. Are you even into them? haha

And when I thought I just find it humorous it turns out I'm crying about it. I appreciate you pointing that out.

Hahahaha,
That's exactly what I find hilarious about this whole thing......

Aeonic always uses the "You Mad" card, yet she's the only one getting bent out of shape.

Word.......
He is a primary reason I stopped posting here a few months back.
When countless people come up to me in public or PM me here asking why I no longer post, his name always comes up.

So, you actually stopped posting around here mainly because of one person?

Late to comment, but Jason, NOTHING will make me like Manilla Road. :flame:

And don't avoid the forum because of AeonicSlumber, my internet husband is just misunderstood!

I'm sure he's all about cuddles and flowers and unicorns IRL.

Absolutely.......

I have no problem with EXTREME disagreements, like I have had with Claus or Neil, as they at least try (not always successfully) to see both sides.

Aeonic is really a piece of work, and I will leave it at that as there is no need to get nasty about it, nor do I care enough to.

Fair enough, I guess. Personally, I'd never stop being a part of an online community because of one person trolling around (sorry Aeonic, *hugs* lol) but if it bothered you that much, then I understand.

Actually, quite the opposite. I'd say the Shark's vocals are an acquired taste like an extremely hoppy, bitter hand-crafted IPA (good example: Stone Ruination IPA). You're not going to like it because it's not what you're used to, but if you let it take you in, you realize it's what you've wanted all along.

And I really can't imagine Manilla Road with anyone other than Shark and Hellroadie. Those early MR albums are incredible, and for some reason the sheer organicness of Mark's vocals win for me. Songs like Necropolis, Divine Victim, and Mystification just wouldn't be the same. At all. And after seeing them live, this was even more confirmed. They will never not be one of my favorite bands once I got into them.

As for Hammers of Misfortune, I always thought they were a good band and not great like others seem to think. Slough Feg resonated more with me, from the first time I heard Twilight of the Idols and so forth. They are true as fuck and put on a damn good show even though they get just fucking wasted beforehand and during.
