(A mixed bill, but since headliners Hatebreed are American I feel US Metal is the appropriate forum)

Between Us frontman Peter Sehlin is either high on meth or extremely nervous this evening. Pacing back and forth without a pause during and between songs he resembles Leo DiCaprio from The Basketball Diaries. He delivers along with his band some heated new school hardcore in a short 6 song set. Granted they all technically know their stuff but they lack the attitude and feel that is so imperative to making hardcore work live. A small crowd has gathered early this evening as Peter waves his arm in a futile attempt to get people moving and spits right out into his audience as this fails. How Green Day...and that's not a compliment.

Painfield I missed completely due to a sudden trek to the pub in the basement.

The uninspired first half of this evening comes to a sudden end as Dutch band Born From Pain takes on the stage. The head on aural assault they deliver is the kind of performance one should tape and force Limp Bizkit to sit through. Frontman Ché Snelting takes on the stage in a way that puts the energizer bunny to shame. Jumping, kicking and flying he's loving every minute of tonight's show and the crowd which has grown in numbers isn't late to respond. BFP describes their music as hardcore but the tremors they give of would make hardened Death metal fans bow their heads. Don't be surprised if you see these guys popping up on magazine covers in the near future, this kind of talent can't be kept under wraps for long. Through every song of their short set pure energy leaps from the stage, Hatebreed better know what they are doing tonight or they'll find themselves unable to outdo their support band.

The venue is quickly filled up with people as the first few chords of tonights headliners fly from the stage, courtesy of Hatebreed. Displaying the same energy as Ché, H's vocalist Jamey Jasta launches into a frenzy and makes it clear that they aren't here to joke around. Having played 250 venues in the last year you'd think that the band would show some signs of roadweariness, but they come across as fresh and hungry as a young Slayer circa Reign in Blood. Their songs are presented with great precision and solid vocals.

At this point I have to bitch at some of the so called fans however. I'm not an enemy of moshing. I consider it an essential and at times enjoyable part of the scene...but when people intentional launch themselves into non-moshers elbows first then it ain't funny anymore. A short girl next to me just enjoying the show is led/dragged of after a cro-mag twice her size comes down hard on her making her unable to stand up without support. I spot another guy leaving a tussle with blood running from his cheek. Myself I'm writing this with some annoying neckpains aquired from the same source as the other uneccesary injuries. Retards.

With a stage smart eye H's roadie passes around water bottles among the front rows while the band rampages on, their fire dimnishing somewhat halfway throughout the gig. It doesn't stop them from spending all remaining strength on the final powerhouse "I Will Be Heard" however. H's love for what they are doing is obvious, the intimacy is so complete you can feel the hair in your neck raising every time Jamey draws breath for another growl. Tonight, Hatebreed and Born From Pain have been kings, they could dare ANY band to walk on after them and remain confident. Best $10 I spent in a long time.
