When you listen to Metal, do you ever find yourself reaching for heavier and heavier discs as you listen? I find this happens to me a lot at the gym, but also while driving. Example...

Started with...

Haha, yes!

I get that when I'm driving too! Mine usually ends up on Naglfar, Vader, or Blood Red Throne. Sometimes I'll trace it back in my head and see how I got to where I am.

Nope.

When driving I generally find myself reaching for stuff I can sing along with, or stuff that really moves along. It makes the drive seem to go by faster than it might otherwise.

I only find myself reaching for heavier and heavier material if I'm feeling aggressive, which isn't all that often.

Nope. At the gym I like aggressive music but I can stick with the same style.

Great song I love crankin doin like 90 MPH on the highway is XYZ's "Take What You Can".

I start out with Journey and then I usually break out the best of Air Supply and sing "sweet dreams" and "Lost In Love" while I drive....AND THEN..I go even lighter with Barbara Streisand "evergreen"!

I tend to vary my listening tastes while driving....after some lighter fare I'll go for heavier stuff, and then after a while I'll revert back to lighter stuff. Within the past few days I've gone from Faith and the Muse to Children of Bodom to Celldweller to Equilibrium.

Always going for the heavier as time travels on. Last Saturday I was heading down to the Jersey shore and left later than I wanted to so traffic was a mess. From Union, NJ through Monmouth Beach, NJ I listened to 'Surveillance' by Triumph, moved on to the self titled debut from Halestorm and then progressed to '7800 Degrees Fahrenheit' by Bon Jovi (quite a heavy album for Jovi). When I got to Monmouth Beach and realized the free parking lot was all filled up and no one was leaving I was pissed as I realized I now had to head to Point Pleasant which was going to be a mess I then moved on to 'Master of Puppets' by Metallica which saw me repeating "Damage Inc" three times. I finally ended up with 'Way of the Fist' by Five Finger Death Punch pulverizing me and driving my girlfriend crazy (shes not into extreme music) until we found parking near Jenkinson's boardwalk.

I tend to listen to happy music when I drive. Heavy stuff can cause road rage, especially here on Long Island where traffic itself can cause some Ill feelings towatds other motorists (most of whom are horrible drivers)

Jazz is the most relaxing when sitting in a traffic jam :)

Oddly, I find that the more aggressive music distracts me from road rage while in the godawful DC traffic. It's fun to "sing" along while listening to Fear Factory's "Back the Fuck Up". ;)
If I've had a particularly stressful day, I'll break out the classical and pretend I'm far, far away.

No. I find it ridiculous that bands, as they're working on their new material, invariably release a statement that says, "Our next album is going to be heavier and darker than..."

How much heavier and darker can music become? None, as Nigel might say.

By today's standards, the first few Black Sabbath albums wouldn't be considered heavy. They're not particularly loud. They're not fast. They aren't a wall of sound. But no one has ever created heavier riffs, in my opinion.

So heavy is relative.

I prefer melody to heavy, anyway. As Jon Drenning told me, create a melody that sticks in my head. That's a great song.

In my 5-CD changer, on any given day, one could hear albums such as these:

(500) Days of Summer soundtrack
Amorphis - Skyforger
Glenn Miller's Greatest Hits
Astra - The Weirding
Dave Brubeck - Time Out

I like to mix it up. :)

My tastes get heavier and heavier every single day, but have to maintain at least some melody or catchiness, not just heavy to be heavy. My current listens are the new devildriver, lazarus a.d., and surprisingly I am enjoying the new shadows fall even though I've never really been a big fan and currently am starting to consider myself one. Decapitated is usually what I listen to if I need the extreme heavy edge going on, or mnemic if I need the heavy with the catchy.

My bigger problem with that statement is that it's almost never true. Bands rarely get heavier.

Depends on your starting point. If it's Grindcore, not much. If it's Sabbath, quite a bit.

If you find "heavy" to be a relative term, swap it out for "aggressive".

I like to mix it up. :)
As do I. I'd suggest there's a greater difference between Hardcore Superstar and Decapitated, than there is between Amorphis and Astra. And bare in mind, my opening statement offers this caveat... "When you're listening to Metal..."

And as for mixing it up, I ended my workout with Decapitated... I ended my cigar (later that same day) with Miles Davis.

Cheers.

While that may be true, I almost always read press releases or interviews with bands who say their next stuff will be heavier and darker. Whether it is or not, I don't know. But I find it funny that some bands claim to strive for heavy and dark all the time, as if both are goals that need to be reached for their music to be "better."

Now you're talkin'! :kickass:

What's you're favorite cigar for an hour or two of Miles Davis?

And, more importantly, what's the perfect drink to go with it?

A man after my own heart.

Your taste in music is exceeded only by your taste in fine drink and cigars.
