I'm mixing a pop-punk/alternative track for a client, happy with how the guitars and bass sounds, but i'm still conflicted on the vocals. the client recorded the vocals by himself, and i can't really re-record his vocals with my equipment, but i did my best to mix it regardless. i think the vocals sit decently on top of the mix but there's this certain whistling sound that i'm not sure how to get rid of, without completely cutting out the high-end eq. i'd love any feedback on the mix in general!

It really depends. If you want to control the sibilance before adding character of your compressor do it before. If you notice you get some spitty-ness after the compressor, then de-ess after compression. See which one works best. Nothing says you can use it more than once either.
