You need an account where to upload tha picture that you want, try www.tripod.lycos.co.uk it's free.
and the picture that you want to use as avatar must be 100x100 pixels.
then go in profile---> edit options (or edit profile, i don't remember now) and when you see the space to put the location of your avatar put there the url

no, it doesn't need to be exactly 100x100 pix. if it's bigger or smaller, it'll get resized automatically

You can also just find a pic on the internet that you think is suiting! I for instance went to www.google.com and searched for "Al Bundy" and found the pic I have now (I had a another pic of him previously, but it didn't work anymore).
