I'm not trying to be a smart aleck here, but what exactly is "real" or "true" metal? I hear that term bandied around the metal community but I've never understood it. When the term "heavy metal" was coined, it was applied to bands like Grand Funk Railroad, Foghat, Steppenwolf, and even Queen as much as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin. It was always diverse - about the only thing those bands have in common is a hard-guitar based sound. That's why I have no problem considering nu-metal, metalcore, or even hair metal for that matter, as branches of heavy metal. Not saying that everyone has to like all kinds of metal - we all have personal tastes (look at the impassioned non growly/growly vocals threads) - but as a longtime metalhead, I have no problem using the term "metal" even for bands and sounds I don't listen to.
