Ellefson was a really good bass player back in the day. Not up there with the greats, but really good.

I always thought he was pretty average, just listening to Megadeth, but then I saw him playing in a video and was like 'holy shit!' Half the stuff I hadn't been picking up on (too busy drooling over Marty ), some of the stuff on Rust in Peace is pretty cool (those songs are hard enough to play on guitar, much less bass.....)
