they recently have seemed much cooler about the kurds because they realize a kurdish buffer zone between them and Iraq is a good thing.

Yeah, I think Turkey's wariness about Kurdistan won't ultimately be the deal-breaker. Turkey acted like a bunch of fucks during the war, so I don't think the US is going to feel especially obligated to respect their wishes.
