I thought this was debunked, but the spirit of it is accurate. I'd guess the statistical swing wouldn't be from 85-113, but with such a large sample, be from 95-105 or even tighter.

Leaving aside the "south is stupid" arguments, notice that the "dumber" states there are poorer states with shittier educational systems. Both of those factors contribute to lower measured IQ scores.

Of course, having a local culture hostile to book-learnin' can't help.

how many people in those states could possibly have gotten IQ tests? the averages are probably from people tested either b/c they are weird and want to find out how 'smart' they are, or they have some sort of problem they are trying to figure out (ie, autism, mental illness, whatever). also, i mean IQ means about 0 in terms of a person's ability to have any common sense.

testing is expensive and pretty much pointless so i dont see why anyone would mandate it unless they were like, military or something.

well generally that doesnt happen in most places. i am 99%sure you have to have organization trained proctors or psychiatrists do them

seriously i doubt a state average would be 99 considering the average OVER THE WORLD is like 116. so below 100 is pretty much el-retardo.

also: alex: yea. i'd say mildly.

The chart Lizard posted is a pretty well known Internet hoax that actually started with the 2000 election and has been modified to fit '04. The sites linked below are supposedly a lot more accurate. There are some similarities (Mississippi is still last, for example) but the range is only 94 - 104, which is along the lines of what Alex was thinking.

No problem. I looked this stuff up a few days ago, since that chart was being passed around by some Kerry voters I know. It kind of got me wondering how valid it was, considering the thing seemed to be circulating less than 24 hours after the election was over.
