Honestly, I have jack shit as far as this stuff goes haha....Vito and I share his Boss BR-8 recorder for demoing riffs and song ideas. I have a ridiculously old drum machine that I use occasionally if I have very specific drum patterns or ideas that I want to convey to the band. Eventually I plan on getting my own recording unit so I don't have to bug Vito for his anymore LOL....I previously went through a number of 4-track machines but somehow I manage to always kill them. They can't handle the metal! (Yeah right...)

Go there to see my stuff. I'm too lazy to cut and or paste. Also, add a Taylor 314 acoustic to that (should arrive this week) and shortly I'll be getting a Studio Projects VTB1 mic pre as well.

As far as drum machines, the Boss DR machines are pretty decent. I use a DR-770 but that's only cuz the 670 wasn't out yet when I bought mine. 670 is cheaper with the same sounds and velocity sensitive pads (rather than force sensitive on the 770 which are tough to control).

frostgiant: i had debated on which to get- the SP B1 or the C1, and ended up going with the B1 since it was half the price of the other. does it have a warmer sound than your other mics? nice equipment list, btw.
also, that SP VTB1 sounds like it's good, but for that price point don't rule out the DMP3- it's a really nice preamp. just a thought.

Studio Projects B1
Behringer ECM8000
Shure SM57
M-Audio DMP3 2-channel Preamp
M-Audio Audiophile card
ProTools Free (cheapskate, i am- but it functions for now)
Reason for sampling/sequencing
Alesis QS8 (getting old, but still sounds okay and has midi & weighted 88 keys)
guitars ('91 Gibson Explorer, '81 Washburn A500, '00 Taylor 310, '00 Cordoba C50, Fender strat, and old Hondo acoustic tuned to open d)
amps ('61 Panaramic/Magnatone C260 w/ tube vibrato, Marshall JCM800)

The C1 is very much worth the money. I think the B1 compliments the C1 nicely especially when dual micing an acoustic, but the C1 just sounds better. Comparatively I think the B1 sounds a little hollow when put up against the C1. And I barely need to eq any vocals when I record with the C1. Maybe a -2db cut somewhere on the low end and a +2db boost around 5000 to add some brightness.

And is that DMP3 a solid state? I'm planning on going with the VTB1 because of the tube blend aspect of it since my audiobuddy is already solid state.

hm. might have to look harder at getting the C1 down the line. B1 was definitely better than what i had for vocals & acoustic guitar, though.
yeah, the dmp3 is solid state but nice, quiet and clean sounding w/ VU meters. i've read the tube aspect of preamps only goes so far until you fork over huge amounts of $ for something like vintage Telefunkens- the cheaper ones may actually hinder sound by dirtying it up unnecessarily (heard that said about ART tube preamps especially). but of any sub-$1000 tube pre, i'd think the vtb1 would be worth checking out. i didn't realize the vtb1's price has been lowered so it's not quite the same ballpark (i had thought they were about the same)- 1 channel for $99, rather than the dmp3's 2 channels for $150. kind of a toss up, but if you need 2 channels don't pass up the dmp3.
i guess the only notable step up from any of these is the RNP (which is like $475 for 2 channels), so either one is really dece. wouldn't consider anything else- i think those're both considered top notch. i'd like to hear what you buy/what you think about it tho.

The audiobuddy I own is a two channel very discrete solid state. And the main reason I've been interested in the VTB1 is cuz it's a tube blend with solid state. Generally I would be apprehensive about a $100 tube amp, but I've read excellent reviews. I will have to look into the DMP3 more though before I make the decision. I'm just worried that's going to be to much like my audiobuddy, in which case I wouldn't really need to buy it.
