How a pro mics up the drums (Hiili Hiilesmaa)

I remember hearing the Glyn Johns technique was used on the last Tool record? (Combined with close mics, of course.) It's a quick ticket to a big, open, natural drum sound.

For the unfamiliar, Glyn Johns and his mic setup are the secret behind the Led Zeppelin drum sound. (A beastly hitting drummer and large, good sounding drums are no secret. )

I actually recorded my post-rock band's demo with the Glyn Johns method too. Turned out better than I excepted (I'm really, really unexperienced in micing), even though some things didn't work that well. Mainly the ride is too overbearing in some parts.

I only used two small diaphragm condensers, a BD mic and a snare mic. All were cheap T-bone stuff too, except the snare was a sm57. Oh, and I miced the room too - I used a random AKG condenser and a 57, but I haven't yet decided which to use.
