well, next schoolyear i'm going to study music management.
and for the selection of this study we had to make an assignment.

The assignment was to think of some new ways to make some money out of a band ( since the cd sales are continually going downwards).

But here comes the point where some people think a band are sell-outs.
So i was thinking ,

what is the best way to make money out of a band without getting the band known as sellouts, according to you?

a good good thing to read into is the way gama bomb and earache records are working now. The new album was totally free to download on release. More money can be made with gigging. Ticket sales, merch sales etc will make a lot of money and shows people how hard a band works at the same time.
tour tour tour

okay, so offering an album for free and then tour your ass off... that was the main point i made when i was working on that assignment.

i must say that i think that those guitar hero and rockband games are good to promote a young band, just like what evile did, and you see that there are many people who got to know Evile because of those games. whether you like the game or not.

Increased touring seems to be a way to do it, but on the otherhand, you get a band who doesn't get a lot of downtime, doesn't get rejuvenated by actually getting away from one another for a period of time and that affects the material is produced. It might even impact the band by making people question why they got into the band to begin with if touring is all there is to it.

you have a point there

but i wanna name another thread here ,that one about the ''big four'' shows going to play in the cinemas. when i saw that, my first thought was '' someone wants to make some money'' and metallica already has a name as sellouts.

what do you think about this? what would be the point of bringing the bg four shows to the cinemas? these bands don't need promotion anymore. So is this just a matter of money?

But I heard most record labels (such as Earache) don't actually make any money from tours, as most tours are done by independent companies.

look up videos of metal musicians talking about how music biz works on youtube. Any of those will be very insightful.

I think the biggest obstacle, or challenge, is how to make a band successful without adopting a full-blown business-first/music-second mindset. Yes, you want to be able to pay your bills and own a house, but you don't want to fully waterdown your art, your craft really, to sell the records.

yes, that is the question i posed in my first post here :p

because, when i end up in the music business in the future , i want to make a band succesfull without making the band known as sellouts. so that's why i started this thread, how to make a band succesfull without getting branded as sellout

Err... You just don't care what anybody else says. Metallica never sold out. They have always done their own thing and kept in control over their music. Cliff Burton supported that and would have probably supported everything they ever did... He really influenced them to have those views. But people will call them sellouts for making the biggest selling metal album ever.

It's the music business, not a music friendship.

Yeah, Metallica never sold out. As they said, with ...And Justice For All they felt they had done everything they could with thrash so there was no point doing another thrash album. They were thinking of disbanding for that reason, but they instead tried to explore a different style, and they were already big hard rock fans, so it was kinda a natural progression for them to write a hard rock/softer album. It was probably better for them to've done this than quit or have just rehashed what they had done with the past 4 albums with no real real motivation or inspiration, which would've led to a poor album.
