how do a natural punch bassdrum sound

^^What they said.

Also, if you happen to own Softube's Dyna-mite plugin, you could try this creative little trick:

Set up the Dyna-mite as an aggressive gate (MODE=Exp, DET=Gate) with a somewhat smooth release time (for example with the BD Gate Hard preset). The gate will cut the first samples of the bass drum, and thus creating a "click" in the beginning. Doesn't sound that nice when solo'ed, but does the trick in the mix.

If you need a longer sustain in the bass drum, you can blend it together with the unprocessed track.

sound examples:

Unprocessed kick

Processed kick

You need a good drum and proper micing, but most importantly you need a great drummer.

Alternately, blending a copy of the kick track smashed with the Dyna-Mite in limiting mode (you can start with the "limiting snap" preset and tweak from there if you'd like) can achieve a similar effect. It's a very aggressive compressor and nice for toughening up kicks and snares. It also likes being pushed into distortion.

I use natural bassdrum only, when the drummer hits it really hard (if it's rock or heavy of course...). You can't get soft hits to sound good, so if there is bad hits or faster parts where the drummer is tickling the kick, you'll always need to sample replace at least those parts.

sometimes you can make a shitty drum sound usable by putting a rediculous scoop between 125 and 1k! Get rid of all the overtones from the fundamental
