they could have been using 2 mics on the same speaker and just has really bad phasing going on -- again, due to bad placement.
How the hell is this sound made?

Guys, how many times do we have to have this debate? This is all subjective. One tone you might think is amazing just might sound like ass to someone else.

I was, for some reason, thinking of single micing. Two with a weird mid range phasing going on makes a lot of sense.
I have to say, I like the strangeness of it a lot though.

If you listen to it on some decent studio monitors or headphones at a decent volume you can hear that it's just reverb mostly. As other people have said though there may be some phasing issues giving it that weird tone.
You may also get the same tone by using an octo reverb mixed with a real fat Hall or cavern echo/reverb.
