How To Write Songs

i usually just take influences from music i like and i play around with and it comes out with a new tune... its really hard to describe

I start with vocal patterns to get a feel of how I want my vocals to go to a tune that my band has come up with Im a metal singer so it comes out as far as topic wise verly easy once I have the pattern I want.

I don't think you can teach someone how to write songs.. You're either good at it or you're not. Just try different things to find your own style.

All decent songs, melodies and riffs have underlying mathematical or theoretical inter and intra-relationships. Some bands are natural at hearing these relationships and employing them. I, however, am not. You're telling me you can't teach someone to utilize this knowledge?

Once you have a basic understanding of scales, keys, intervals, harmonies, modes, and how all of that interrelates, everything starts getting real easy. I'm working on some instructional material (tablature jpegs and MIDIs) and sooner or later, I will dedicate a thread in this forum to basic music theory instruction. I'll add this thread to my favorites folder of threads to be bumped with a link when I finally post it.

Nah, but that's more learning to play an instrument imho. Anyway, i was mainly speaking about lyrics..

Writing songs takes time, usually when I write songs I try to piece all kinds of riffs together. But be sure to make transitions so it doesn't just sound like a random "riff-o-rama".

Also be sure to have some kind of background in theory (something I'll admit I'm still working on :p), it'll make it that much easier.
