How was the NYC show?

Very interesting thread. I wasn't going to respond to this one, and the more I thought about it, I decided I will speak my mind on this, as honestly as I can. We spoke about this in length in the van after the NY show.

We open ourselves up to you guys through this forum, and try to keep in contact with people, because we feel this is a great way to give people something extra out of us. We're not obligated to do so, and many bands want nothing to do with their own forums. The problem is, sometimes things go too far. Does the heckling piss us off? YES. IT DOES. It's disrespectful to us on many levels, but more importantly, we're not on stage to fuck around for a few of the forum guys. We're being PAID to do a job, and put on a great show for the couple hundred other people who paid money to see us.

We would never come down to your job, and shout at you when you're working. Maybe it was funny the first couple of times, but now it's whipping a dead horse, and the jokes are getting very old.

By responding with everyone on the forums, people begin to look at us as "friends" and consider us all buddies because we joke around here. This is the place for the jokes, not while we're performing.

Shouting the names of our songs you want to hear us play live, is not heckling, and we would never mind that. Shouting the names of other bands songs, because you guys know the lazy comparisons irritate us in the press, just to try to be the "funny guy" in the audience is disrespectful, rude, makes us question why we open ourselves up to it, and can easily keep us from posting here as often. You guys all jumped on Jasonic, telling his to chill out, and actually he's right.

SO, after saying all this... Under the circumstances, we do joke back on stage, but we would rather not be put into that position. We don't hold any ill feelings towards any of you guys who did this, and as Will said, he came to Chicago, and then to NY, so we put him on the NY guest list. We DO APPRECIATE you guys coming out to see us. Like I had said earlier, we're being paid to do a job, and others have paid to watch us perform. If you want to come up to us after the performance, and joke with us, we're all for it. Just keep the forum jokes away from the stage next time.

oops my bad sorry:cry: :erk:

I laugh every time such comparisons are made. There are 100s of blackmetal bands that sound exactly alike, 100's thrash bands that sound exactly alike, 100s of brutal death metal bands that sound exactly alike. I have heard many many bands out there and none of them sound even remotely close to warrant a strong comparison Novembers Doom, or Opeth for that matter. I've listened to ND for roughly 6 years now and enjoy revisiting certain works more specifically. Anyone who would describe this music as "much like" any other band instantly looses creditibility in my eyes.

on the other hand I'd love point out that this is just music.. why are we all doing this and listening to it if not for enjoyment and relaxation and to bring some color to or sometimes get away from the day to day? relax..

anyways, carry on.

Is that Swedish you speak when you're up on stage? If so... why? I'm not knocking it or anything. I find it interesting that a band from NYC is doing it.

I hope you don't mean you didn't understand everything I was saying throughout the show? lol

no, we're polish, our sound guy is polish, there was a moment we were giving him some instructions.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I heard and understood everything you said between songs. When it came to your little sound check thing, I noticed that it wasn't English... noticed the same thing at Heathen Crusade.

it probably does, but that doesn't mean people who don't bang don't appreciate. just remember that ;) don't tell anybody else how to enjoy a show.

I've never understood that mentality. To me, Metal shows are cathartic. If I don't wake up the next morning with a sore neck and hangover, I might as well have gone to church.

Hmmm. I am just not a demonstrative person. I don't jump up and down, I don't scream, I don't constantly pump my fists in the air. My head bobs, my feet tap, I beat rythyms on my legs with my hands. I clap or whoop at the end of a song. Maybe <gasp> I DO stand there with my arms crossed sometimes. But I *listen and watch*. I appreciate. I get elated. I experience catharsis and often feel quite refreshed and energized after a particularly good show. I am just more introverted, I guess. Should have my head examined to try to fix this problem?

As long as you enjoy the show, all is well in my book. :headbang:

Yknow honestly I don't think we need to get into an arguement of opposite extremes about this issue. On one hand it is not necessary for every single member of the crowd to bang their heads and go nuts, of course. It's not just about that, there are plenty of people in the crowd who are supportive and enjoying the show just by standing and watching. But when a majority of the crowd are just standing there with blank looks on their faces and refuse to even applaud in between songs, that's when the vibe is lacking and kinda sucks for us onstage. Or when you have people who are clearly more interested in their booze and their conversation with the people next to them during our songs, that's definitely not an inspiring vibe for a band. It's those sorts of things that I'm talking about. If you stand there with arms folded and a smile on your face while we play and give a hearty applause at the end of the song or beginning of the next song, that's great. You don't have to be giving yourself whiplash in order to show your enjoyment, though that is appreciated as well!

I think the people that are really "into" any band will go bonkers at shows ... physically. Others who are merely appreciative of certain aspects of their music will usually stand, smile and give a cheer at the end of each track.

The others drinking, and conversing with their buddies, waiting for the next band or just merely waiting for the end of the night ... those ... the band on stage has to win over :loco:

I know I can certainly fit into each of those 3 categories depending on who I see ...

I particulary remember back in the hey days seeing Slayer and any band opening for them had to really give their all to not be drowned out by Slayer chants ... that's fucking pressure. Since those days, and I have been to countless shows, I have yet to see this kind of unwelcome reception to bands. Everyone is pretty damn polite nowadays ...

I think it's good that people are polite these days. I don't care what anyone says, I fucking HATED when the Slayer fans would boo anyone and everyone off the stage (besides Slayer). Slayer were fucking awesome back then, yeah, but they had some awesome opening acts who I wanted to see as well. Alot of people say "well Slayers fans are just THAT devoted".....true, but alot of Slayer's fans were just troublemaking assholes too. A band that extreme (at the time) were bound to attract all types, really. I'd be very pissed if any of our fans ever booed off one of our tourmates, that's for sure.
