So, I've been told A million times by my brothers that I have a REALLY weird music taste. o_O I was wondering about what you guys have.

Mine ranges from the first to last.

Hawk Nelson
Relient K
12 Stones
Theocracy
Before Their Eyes
Haste The Day (not that big of a fan, but I like a few songs...)
August Burns Red
As I Lay Dying

So you can see, it ranges from punk, to death metal. and BTW, my fav. Relient K album is their 1st. :loco: And there are other I didn't list.

There's no death metal on that list. Try mortification. Anyway, I mainly like power and symphonic metal or straight-up Hard Rock/nu-metal (Three Days Grace, Gidsmack, Skillet). I do like some lighter stuff, but not much. Relient K is good though. Or used to be.

Where's the death metal?
Just listen to what you like, you don't have to form lists or conform yourself :p

Here are some examples what I like to listen to:

Gotthard (Hard Rock)
Petra, Place Vendome (AOR)
Amorphis, Haggard (Melodic/Folk/Death)
Theocracy, Sonata Arctica, Helloween, Rhapsody of Fire (Powermetal european style)
Saviour Machine, Evanescence, Sirenia (Gothic-Rock/Metal)
Tourniquet (Thrash)
Bloodgood, Stryper, Guardian, Tempest... (80s Metal)
Ayreon (Progressive Rock/Metal)
Ensiferum (Folk Metal)
Alter Bridge, Creed, Live, Lifehouse (Alternative Rock)
The O.C. Supertones (Ska Rock)
The Electrics (Irish Folk Rock)
One Band Pig (Fun Punk, also like some Punk Rock)
Michael W. Smith, Danny Plett (Worship/Pop)
Casting Crowns, Third Day, Jeremy Camp (Worship/Rock)
Vivaldi, Bach, Händel (Classical)
John Powell, James Horner, Hans Zimmer, WDR Orchestra (Orchestral Movie and Game Soundtracks)
David Plüss, David Bryan, Simeon & John (Piano/Instrumental)

Wow...how long did that take, Snert? I like most of those, but I have to say, isn't the same genre as Alter Bridge, or Creed.

Oh, sorry for overloading this thing with my posts, but Fleshandbloodtheocracy, Three days grace swears soooo much.

Aletheus. You Can't tell me this isn't death metal. The Verse isn't, but the chorus is.

Metalcore. Death metal is much more thrashy than that. I find people who judge a genre by vocals to be people who should never be in the music industry.

And so what if they swear? The music is good, and most of their songs have some positive twist. Although, just for the record, their latest, life starts now, doesn't have a single "cuss word"

For legit death metal, check out my uncle Mark's old band -- they're called rottrevore. Apparently they're back together, but Mark doesn't play with them now because of the whole having a family thing. Also, because Chris Free is several choice expletives.

defnitely agree on the "used to be" part about relient k  and Mortification is beast! But I've never heard of Gidsmack :loco:

Wow. You really know your stuff...:D

AILD is definitly not death metal.....

The perfect embodiment of death metal is Cannibal Corpse.

Metalcore: ALID, ADTR, Atreyu, Austrian Death machine, Killswitch Engage
Punk: social d, flatfoot 56, dropkicks, flogging molly, Lard, Offspring, Misfits(with Michale Graves)
Thrash: metallica
Hard rock: flyleaf, deftones, Korn, Red, Skillet, Fireflight, SOAD
Powermetal: Theocracy, HB, Dream Theater,
Progressive rock:Coheed and Cambria, fair to midland

woah dude. gonna have to call you on a couple things in this one..Cannibal Corpse sucks :loco: a better band would be Mortification. and Dream Theater is Progressive Metal not power! other than that it looks good from what i've heard of. you should add Seven Witches and Oil to your thrash list :D

I'm with Snert, especially Händel, Tourniquet and One Bad Pig.

I also love Mozart (classical) and Mahler (Romantic), Shiro Sagisu (Anime soundtrack) a bit of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra too.
Adiastasia, Deliverance, Ecthirion, HB, Steve Taylor, Stryper, Temple of Blood and Yngwie Malmsteen (rock and metal)
Then there's Aish! (me!!) who composes experimental electronic music, doof doof, pseudo folk rock/metal and symphonic music too.

Interesting everyone going on about Mortification. I'm old enough to have seen Lightforce become Mortification in 1990/91 and to hear quite a range of styles including death metal emerge. I don't adore them, but there are some great songs...

This thread is so wrong :((((

I'm shit when it comes to differentiating time signatures and octaves and other technical stuff but I learned to tell apart metalcore bands (AILD, Killswitch Engage, Unearth) from Death, Morbid Angel and their Christian counterparts.

Metalcore has a ton of breakdowns throughout songs, which are actually pretty unnecessary, and the vocals are either aggressive screams or lighthearted eerie melodies mostly sung as a chorus.

Death metal utilises growls, and growl means using a completely different technique from screaming.

Pay attention to the part after 0:30

I suppose that's a breakdown..

If you want some Christian death metal try this

There's a ton of differences, you can't call AILD or Haste The Day death metal just because they use 'harsh' vocals...those dreaded screams are one of the main reasons people hate metalcore today :))

If you want some insight into every style's characteristics try reading it up on wikipedia then listening to a song and looking for those aspects of music.

I agree cannibal corpse does suck...but they are non the less a prototypical death metal band. Power metal and prog metal almost the same in my eyes. ya prog is a more technical but and has crazier breaksdowns and what not....but I didn't feel creating a whole new sub genre at the time:lol:
