Howard Jones leaves Killswitch Engage

You know what... I'm just gonna say it..
As long as Phil 'I can't sing for shit' La Bonte doesn't join, I'm still looking forward to how this pans out. The self titled really killed any love for Howard I had so hopefully this is actually a step forward for a band who still has a lot of life left!

I hope they turn into Phillswitch Engage. I love Jesse's range, but I hope he doesn't rejoin. Howard's voice got me into Killswitch, but it grated on me after a while.

Phil Labonte is an awful singer.

At least Howard could hold a note or two, I have no idea why people would be gunning for a guy that is only even salvageable by shit tonnes of autotune. Jeff, don't you rail against Sotelo for exactly the same shit?

No, I rail against Spencer because his phrasing is shit and he has this whiney quality to his voice that I cannot stand.

I saw Philswitch Engage last year - Phil nailed everything and can do the whole "screamed melodies" bit quite well. I'm not sure what you're getting at with him needing autotune? He's been great every time I've seen him with ATR as well.

He only does the screamed melody shit because he can't actually sing it clean after he does the screams. Hell, half the time he just gets the crowd to do the clean sections, it's pretty evident on the live DVD and in nearly every other documented ATR performance.

Jeeesus, I guess the whole "live atmosphere" really does a lot to mask that. For a genre that's more or less defined by clean singing alongside screams, there is a serious lack of great vocalists.

Yeah to be honest I don't blame you or anything, the moment you get a couple of beers down you and the volume is hideously loud I think a lot of shit gets masked. I just find it weird how you've never seen those videos before.

And I think its the transitioning between the singing and the screaming that is the main culprit - most people are either one or the other; I don't think I've seen anyone transition capably bar Akerfeldt between even growls and singing.

I think Howard had some fair reasons for leaving.

The statement is as follows:

“Well, I guess I will shed a little light without going too deep. As some of you may know, I’ve had a pretty interesting couple of years to say the least battling with some personal issues. One of the low points being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that went unchecked for years. The rest of the band stuck with me through it, and to be honest they are the ones that kept me going. The whole experience definitely put a scare in me. Recently we’ve all been in writing mode but somehow I couldn’t get excited about the new album and all the touring that would go with it. The guys saw it before I did. In hindsight I now realize that my heart wasn’t in it. I have had an amazing decade with KSE. I love Justin, MikeD, Joel and Adam for hanging in there and standing by me no matter how bad it was. I have so many good memories, and those are the ones that I will keep. Will I be involved in music again? Sure, I have been in bands for a little over half my life, can’t stop now. Until then, get the new KsE album, it’s going to be good. Thanks everyone for letting me try to entertain you, and I wish myself well in my future endeavors.

Gone fishin’ Howard“

^^^ my girlfriend has Type 1 diabetes, insulin dependent and it wouldn't cause issues for singing/ touring etc..
So as much as I feel for the guy, it sucks bad, I don't buy the reason!

Type 1 is not type 2. I remember some years ago the bassist for Dark Tranquility had a similar (or the same?) condition and ended up leaving the band as well, couldn't keep up with the touring

Hell Yeah! Saw the new promo picture on their website - it's amazing. i saw jesse last year with times of grace and his voice was so powerful, he was the best singer in killswitch engage. and i'm going to see them in june - hope it'll be a blast. :Smokedev:
