How's this tone?

That bad, eh?

Well yes, or there is something wrong with the file. To be honest I can't believe you make it sound the way it sounds over here unless it is some sort of joke hehe.

*edit*

I apologize for insulting you, but I thought it was a joke at first. Normally Winamp plays any Wav file normally, but not this one, I get really loud clipping/cracking sounds. On another player it sounds normal though, so got that figured out. On the tone, it sounds really 'robotic' altogether. But maybe you wanted that. I don't know what you use to get the sound, but there's lots of ways of making it sound more natural if you want. Lots of guys here that make killer tone with free ampsim plugins.

Okay, thanks. I wanted to see how far I could go with just a RAT pedal into the audio interface, then through Amplitube JHE/Fender - because that setup allows me to work silently (small apartment).

Well why not try something with other (free) plugins like Lecto? I haven't got too much experience with Amplitube, but I heard the samples from a recent thread of Mattayus and they sound great, he used free plugins too.

I've used Lecto briefly and it didn't quite live up to my Recto preamp. But I'll check it out again.

Meanwhile, is this any better? Re-recorded with a different dirt pedal.

It sounds quite alike to be honest. But since you have a Recto preamp then, why not record that and use a cabinet impulse? Also quiet and I think it works better than recording dirt pedals directly. :goggly:

I really wanted to make a dirt pedal -> amp sim work. Now it's back to the preamp. Thanks for your honest critique.

No problem, at least I'm glad that I figured out how to listen to it cause I absolutely don't want to insult anyone (I really thought it was a joke), still a weird Wav format then hehe. Well and you never know if it works unless you try. Still I would think it should work somehow, especially with a clean amp simulator after the pedal.

The amp sim in question is the Marshall model from Amplitube JHE (with cabs from AT Fender) set to just a slight bit of grit. I've only used headphones the last couple of weeks - probably a bad idea 'cause I actually reached a point of thinking this sounded pretty okay.

Does the bass & the drums suck too, tonewise? Of course it's just a sketch to figure out basic tone so no inspired playing.

Yes on headphones it usually sounds better easier. The bass is a little hard to tell since the drums are really overpowering in the lows. Maybe loose a little low end (high pass) and low mids on all the drums. Then still the drums might sound a little mechanical, but maybe that's what you're after? Because I have no clue what it needs to sound like, now I would think it's industrial style you're after.
