or make myself look like a donkey for stating that I've never mixed with monitors before. actually I haven't been doing much recording lately. I have a pair of yamaha HS50M's that have been just sitting there for months. I finally got a new interface and decided to start using the monitors. the problem is that when I connect them to the interface my volume is way too low compared to the computer speakers that I have been using. even if I crank the knob on the back of the monitors I still can't get it very loud.

am I missing something? do I need an amp?

my interface is the m-audio fast track pro and I am using the TRS outputs.

Yamaha HS50M's are powered:
Do you have them plugged into a power source? (I know dumb questions but it has to be asked)
Does the power adapter work?

Also check that the control room setting on the back is set to 0db not -2 or -4

I have it set correctly and as far as I can tell, the power source is working. I"m gonna try connecting to my old soundcard and see if there is a difference in volume.
