lol, lars.. nuff said.

it all depends on the angle of the stick hitting it really. i like my toms NEARLY flat, cos im always hitting down on them and it just makes sense.

It all depends on the drummer for me. Most of the time I can fit my fist between the snare and the 57. I don't really like a close mic'd snare. Unless the drummer doesn't do rimshots...

Here's a video of some drums I've recorded recently. It's not the best snare sound ever. But it's not horrible.

alex has a great setup! i'll post mine soon. but im not using my good kick drum at the moment as im still waiting for it.

I do like the snare mic an inch or more from the snare...gives more crack and less proximity boomyness...I often have it further away even than in the OP's pic....more towards the rim though, I don't want the drumer to hit it.
but tbh...doesn't matter how you mic, with those ancient skins you'll never get a good tone :(

Quick question for the "pros".. when you place the OH mics do you usual angle the mics away from the the snare like this "/ \" .. or do you angle them straight down or at the snare ?

(when doing stereo pairs)

Man I watched all those videos of Alex a few times over a few weeks ago. Great playing - I love how he seems to make a point of using all of his limbs equally (more so in some vids than others)... is this right?

Also, the drums in those videos sound quite nice in a dry way anyway so :headbang:

Thanks a lot man. And yeah, he focuses on ambidexterity. Sometimes leading with the left hand or foot. It actually does a lot for a recording. It kinda evens things out. He's been my guinea pig for recording for awhile now. The one thing that really holds us back is that damn concrete room with carpet on the walls! You wouldn't believe how much it kills the snare in the mix.

This cracked me up for some reason.

Yeah, I agree that notion about the drummer's toms. Hurt my eyes a little, but just a little - unfortunately I've seen setups that look much, much worse than that
