I just broke the new Stratovarius CD in half!!!!

In an effort to prevent people from "leaking" the new Stratovarius album "Polaris" their label is sent out review copies where the music drops out and in followed by 5-7 seconds of silence before he music is slowly faded back in. I snapped and broke the disc in half and threw it in the trash. You know if I would have had a clean listen of the entire album I think I would have enjoyed it....

 Makes it a bit difficult to review, huh?
I thought you were going to say that you broke it in half due to quality of the music, which wouldn't have been a huge surprise... although I'm hopeful that Tolkki's departure will somehow breathe some life back into the band.

Yeah, I also would have thought it was that bad...
Or maybe that bad they don't want people to have a listen before they buy it :)

I didn't know that Stratovarius was an important enough band for a label to go to such extremes to prevent the "leaking" of their music online.
I've listened to some of their (same-sounding) stuff and they have yet to make an impression on me.

I hope you haven't cut your hands, breaking CDs can be dangerous. May this be a lesson to you, not to listen to silly stuff :heh: even if it's a freebie.

I haven't been following them lately. So they cut a record with a new guitarist? Seems kinda odd doesn't it considering Tolkki IS Stratovarius.

Yeah, they picked up some young unknown guitarist. Can't be any worse then the last 10 years worth of meritocracy.

I'm somewhat interested in this new album, actually. Yes, Tolkki was Stratovarius but the fact that he's only written a handful of interesting songs since Destiny plus all the internet drama bullshit meant that there really was no future for the band with him in. Who knows if the rest of the band can even write good songs (judging by his solo albums, Kotipelto sure can't) but I'll give them a shot.

Their best material is the Queensrÿche-worship of the early 90s anyway. :kickass:

It's funny because the only stratovarius I could get into was the 2 elements discs. They had their share of crap, but their moments of brilliance too. I can't get into their supposed "classic" late 90s material.

How is their earlier material (ie. 89-95)?

The early material has less double bass speeding and more traditional metal stuff with prog leanings, clearly influenced by Queensrÿche et al and Yngwie of course. I'm not too familiar with the debut or the first few albums with Kotipelto but Twilight Time and Dreamspace are well worth checking out. They are a bit rough around the edges at times though, especially lyrically. Not saying that later Strato lyrics are exactly Shakespeare either.
Tolkki sings on the first three albums and he actually has (had) a great voice, he's better than Kotipelto if you ask me.

Cool, I rather liked Twilight Time. Timo reminds me of the guy from Brainstorm vocally (Andy). Pretty rychish in nature, I'll have to check some of that out later. Maybe with a bit of Arch thrown in.

I think the vocalsist is good but yes I was thinking for a band from that region that they would be distinct. There like most other traditional metal bands.

So they kinda went from a Queensryche kind of thing to a Helloween kind of thing ? or they always did both ?

It has a cool cover, it would be cool if it was just a poster, with no logo or album title, and no CD with the poster, and I could put it on my wall. Stratovarius is terrible.. :puke:

Hey, I Like Stratovarius

I respect your taste, but to me like Rhapsody of Fire, Skylark, Sonata Arctica (and more) they're all that is not well with Euro power metal. Just my opinion.

Interestingly I have Timo Tolkki "Classical Variations And Themes" and I like the album.

well, all you have to do is spread any strato song and youve probably leaked the next album...not a ton of differentiation between all of it...

^i hope somebody didnt already crack that joke, didnt feel like reading all the posts to see. lol
but with that said, i listen to stratovarius sometimes. they lost me with maniac dance though.

my band out of "that" euro-power metal feel is with sonata. i usually just go for them.

It's all good brother man!!! I like Euro Power Metal but many more styles besides. Music is all subjective and what the listener get's out of it. There is listening (and not liking it) and then there is listening with full understanding and this makes it easier.

Probably for Country and Rap also. I don't get into Country...partly because it puts me to sleep, freaks me out a bit, and I'm sure that a huge part is that I don't get it (or alot of it).

Hell..many years ago I couldn't listen to Black Metal and now I do all the time..from Venom to Dimmu,Immortal to Emperor.

I love the shit now. Can't have a collection without it....
