I might try Linux

Probably too much pain for what you get when speaking of audio software. But else, I'd be able to live with a Linux only laptop. Not as a single-boot system on my main computer though...

Harrison Mixbus i pretty cool, even if it is a modified Ardour. One reason to go Linux (although it runs on mac too, but fuck mac). Don't know of anything like it (A DAW made by a high-end console manufacturer). Very nice compression and EQ comes with that thing. It used to be in the REAPER range for price but it has gone up since. i definitely recommend trying it, and it's inherent limitations will teach you a bit about the juggling that is necessary when working with real consoles.

Linux would be fantastic for audio. The overheads can be so incredibly low that you can get stunning low latency performance out of mediocre hardware. However, no one supports it, so unless you want to get out of the 3rd party commercial plug-in game and you've got an interface that actually has linux drivers, then just dont.

If I worked primarily with outboard then i'd move to linux, no question.

kvoid, that Harrison Mixbus seems really tempting, I might actually give it a try.

Seriously, stay on windows. Windows 7 is seriously good.

In the hypothetical world where all pro would support unix systems (is in electronics conception etc) it would be awesome.

Unless you like working on your OS more than on music, stay on Windows.

Don't trust those who say it's totally easy. There will be a day when you will have a problem, and will have to open some stupid system files to add or remove a line, and where you will fuck something up, unless linux has drastically changed !

I remember in 2008, just out of the box, i had to open several files and add mounting points manually in the lines to make the internal hard drive permanently mounted, and it took me like 2 or 3 hours because I did know nothing of it at the first time.

Linux is nice for engineering, programming, or if you want everything totally free, this kind of stuff. Otherwise, it's just a pain in the ass for nothing, IMO.

John and Mat said it. I really dont think it can get better than windows 7 at the moment. Best OS I've ever used I think in many ways. I too wish linux would really work for audio, and I guess it can to an extent, but boy is it a pain in the ass. As much as I love fucking around with computers, most days I just want them to work with as little input from me as possible, and that is what windows 7 does- beautifully.

Well then by all means go for it and let us know how it goes because I'm curious but I think it will be a hassle

+1. Even if only for mobile tracking stuff it could be cool. Get more performance from weaker laptops. Then mix everything later with Windows or Mac.
