well i will give them that when i listened to them (it was "to welcome the fade") the first time a few years ago i was blown away. i remember being really high and thinking the riffs were the greatest thing ever and telling myself that this was everything i wished opeth could be...but then the next morning i showed them to my friend and we cought some of the lyrics and it was hard to take it seriously after that.

regardless i still find the song "torn" one of the most beautiful i've ever heard.

anyways i'm going to set my impression of the lyrics being cheesy aside and try some of their other albums. any suggestions?

Ok, I am one of the resident Novembers Doom fans who are also into power metal.

Rhapsody has cheesy lyrics......

ND's lyrics are 100% heart-felt and serious.

Check out the book for more detail into the story behind the lyrics to every ND album.
Might change your mind.

As others said, folks are reacting this way because you came onto the band's own forum slamming the lyrics.
Think about it.

If you take certain lines of lyrics out of context, they can certainly come off strange or silly. Add to that the fact that touching on very personal subjects can also seem unorthodox and odd in the Metal genre. At this point I'm much more interested in hearing lyrics of a more honest and personal nature, even if they are at times "uncomfortably personal" (as one reviewer was quoted as saying in the past), than the typical themes that have been bled dry by metal bands for 30+ years now. A bunch of predominantly white, middle-class males singing about the power and might of Satan and the brutality of bloody war and the dark depths of hell and all that rubbish comes off far cheesier to me than someone simply writing about the emotional and personal shit they have to deal with in their real lives. Some people don't agree and that's fine, it's their choice. But as for not being able to take the overall music seriously because of some lyrics being found questionable.......fuck, I'd say 95% of the music I enjoy probably has lyrics that I either don't connect with or find to be silly or whatever.
Anyhow, the way your "question" was put forth in your initial post came off as being smart-assed and insulting, like you're just looking to stir up shit for a laugh at our expense. You made no introduction or anything as a first time poster here, or indicated that you had any respect or genuine interest in the band, so naturally your post is going to be received negatively. And given the other posts I've seen you make on the Opeth forum, for example, it's hard to take anything you say seriously.
