I need a violin for a present for someone who wants to learn how to play. I don't want to go cheap, but I don't want to have to sell a kidney for one either. I would like some advice from you folks, as well as any info or deals on them that any of you might have... I remember an instrument thread a while back by.. claus was it? .. for good PP board deals.

please email me at nailz1000 a+ gmail DAWT com .. obviously correct it. lol.. my PM's don't seem to work. :<

Thanks guys!

Sure check out Southwest Strings as a magazine.

The problem you'll face is you'll have no idea what it sounds like, and especially if you don't know what the person wants (like what type of sound).

But this catalog was recommended to me for looking for a violin, so I recommend it to you =D

And yeah Violins can run pricey. A decent one with bow will run $400-500.

yea not knowing what something sounds or plays like can be a mistake, i dont know so much about violins though, they might be generally more the same than guitars are. i remember once buying a guitar without actually playing it cause it seemed to be what i was looking for (it was online); i quickly sold the guitar a few months later cause i just didnt like much about it.

if you can get enough suggestions from people, it might make up for the fact that you havent played it, but everyone is different. i would go somewhere and try one out and maybe ask one of the people at the shop for suggestions based on the violin you like, unless you find one there.

I'd be interested to hear what you decide, as I've actually been thinking about learning to play the violin!

However, just in case you happen to live with this person, you should know that there is NO worse sound than someone who doesn't know what they are doing attempting to play the violin!
