I need to make a jet engine starting and accelerating sound from scratch

Reverse sound wave of wind, maybe even a wind thru a steel pipe etc
Might work for accelerating if you automate the volume
Don't know about the starting jet engine part though
Just some random ideas that might work, ya never no until ya give it a go

You could get the hum from a vacuum cleaner for the acceleration part. EQ, pitch shift, automate.

No fucking clue, really. Just throwing that out there lol.

Why from scratch? There shoudl be a sample SOMEWHERE on the net that is royalty free?

well its probably for a class or something i assume.

Maybe you could do a pitch shifted piano or guitar note. Have some very heavy tremolo on it to where its almost cutting out completely. And then automate that to speed up and at the same time automate the pitch to shift up to?
Ive never done it before but it makes sense in my head.

Ah....mic up a guitar with a ton of gain and record the hiss/fizz...then pitch shift it slowly with increased level and later add in a sub or something

Hell - just record your voice doing it then add some effects - instant Jet engine. :)

The sound of airplanes can be achieved by putting a microphone inside of a 3-4 feet pipe, and then directing the pipe towards a running vacuum cleaner.
Then duplicate the track, pitch it down by one octave and repeat until you get the desired low end(And then mix it of course.).

To get the "wind up" effect i guess you just have to pitch it.

not for a class, more of just a test to see if I can do it. this band wants me to make some intro track for their live show and this is part of what they want. I could take the easy way out and get a sample from the internet but this will be more fun and more educational.

where'd you get that at???

Well, its actually just "The Sound Effects Bible" and a bunch of papers i got from a friend of mine who apparently was interested in foley work.. so i dont know where it originates from. :P

That video Mark posted is a very nice example and i think i could achieve about 90% of that sound just using 1 wind/breath type synth (Majken Chimera) and 1 theremin synth (Super Spook Keys) and 1 overdrive effect.
