prank phone calls are illegal on any medium. that's why Crank Yankers isn't on anymore. the person being pranked in calls nowadays are warned about it beforehand.

I heard an interview with Jim Florentine who voiced the Special Ed (yaaaaaay!) character on Crank Yankers and he said they would do the calls from a hotel room in Vegas as a way to circumvent the laws/rules about prank calls. Not sure if that has changed or not, but Richard and Sal continue to deliver some classic calls on the Howard Stern show.
