and also i know nothing about the lingo associated with it so what is the deal with a static ip address? is that something i want? any suggestions for someone as clueless as me?

yeah, greg you definitely don;t need a static IP for anything you're going to be using your computer for. People that get them usually want one because they're running their own webservers and things like that.
Static IP - always stays the same. When you're stalking girls from the internet, they will be able to trace you easier.
Dynamic IP - assigned to randomly by your host, based on your router block Makes stalking more anonymous.

The cool thing about dynamic IPs is that when you get really obnoxious online and end up sitebanned, they have to siteban your entire community to keep you out!

i have had verizon dsl. i hate them for their long distance and telephone service but the dsl worked great and i am signing up for it again next week.
