fusoya, i know! i think they run out of pet names (since there's like a bejillion animals there) some of the names are lame.
usually i go on the appalachian trail or something or go wherever my sister wants to go. but maybe this year i can go to best friends. i think it'd be neat since i've never really done major animal rights stuff or seen a totally self-run animal shelter that has everything from horses to birds to bunnies.

I've never been myself, but I know a bunch about them both good and bad. One of my wife's family friends lives nearby and volunteers sometimes. while it'd be a great place to do stuff at, my main complaint is that it's the smaller orgs that lose out b/c they need more help and money but BF gets it all. but not as bad as how ARF (tony larusa's pet-help org) gets A TON of cash, but barely does shit.

yea. i know they do get a lot of money. but they also take animals from shelters all over the country! which i think is great. i'd say i give them more money than i do any other organization other than the veterans.

I don't want to diss on them b/c they do indeed do great work. I'd like to see their facility, too. It's mostly just that having done my own volunteering with the Milo Organization, I've seen how hard plenty of other groups have it.

there will always be other groups that have it hard. and best friends does at least give trainings etc. to help other groups learn how to function at a higher level. i give my $ there. i also help out a few shelters in NYC but only if i've seen them.
i wish there were someplace not quite so expensive near best friends to stay. gotta keep looking around.

I thought they had sleeping quarters or something for volunteers?

they have huge money-bin-like vaults filled with furry dogs that you can throw yourself into, swim around in, and sleep on at night.

oh that's a good idea. maybe i'll just call them and see what's up. i'd just hate to get someplace far away and not have transportation!
