May be buying a set of EMGs from a forum member, and I'm unsure whether the pickups will fit into my guitar or if I'd have to get the cavities routed. I'm tempted to take the pickups out and check, but I don't have the EMGs to test fit. Anyone know if this will work with my Ibanez S-470 or will I need to get it routed?

It should be fine, I had a really early model S470 years ago with 81/85 in it.

Really? I've done research and it appears I'd need routing work done, but maybe I'm just too worried about it? Fact is, I only have one guitar....so if I did get the p'ups and they didn't fit , I'd be axe-less for a few days while the work got done.

probably will need to route ... read a few threads saying ibby pickup routes are a tad bit smaller than needed for EMG's.

I had one about 3 years ago, and from what I was told by a tech, you have to route..

I ended up not getting EMGs because of this very reason, though looking back, I wish I had gotten them...

...I wish I still had that guitar too...

Look at me resurrecting old shit...well to back up 006, no you don't have to route anything. They fit perfectly. Bryan probably doesn't even have this guitar any more  FUCK!!!!

The problem I have is the fucking battery not fitting into the back cavity. I had to put it in the space between the bridge block and the wood behind it. Obviously can't use the trem but I never really use that anyway.

Anyway yeah thread necro. Might help someone somewhere.

Holy shit.

Actually, I still do have the guitar. I have since bought an LTD which is my main axe now with EMG 81's in it. I recently pulled the Ibanez out of its dark hole and it was bad. It basically needs all new hardware, pickups, pots, wiring, etc.

I restrung it for a backup just for now. It plays like a piece of firewood though. I think it will be a project guitar in the near future. After plugging it into my Mark IV with the shit stock pickups, I noticed how muddy and flubby it is compared to my EMG equipped guitar. So nasty. In a bad way.

Is your 470 Korean or Indo?

I have a Korean S470 that's around the same quality as an old LTD 400 series, but with a better trem and a bolt-on neck, lol. Mine plays relatively nice too. The neck profile isn't all that great, though. It's not all that thin, buter super flat, so it kinda feels like a plank of wood, lol, but mine's got super low-action, and sounds good with the EMG's.

Regular EMG's did fit mine, but the cavity's TIGHT with the solderless electronics. I'm only using a single volume, though. No way I could fit a second pot in there.

To fit the HUMONGOUS EMG 81TW, I did have to carve a hole in the pickup cavity, though.

Korean here, too. Had mine since 2001 and used it on stage countless times. Blackouts are nearly the same size as the regular EMG's and they had plenty of room in mine. I'm just a huge fan of the shape and the Wizard II for some reason. I did see this on Guitar Porn today:
