I was very surprised when I found out that Icarus Witch is an American band. They usually don’t do this classic traditional metal thing, but bands like Slough Feg, Twisted Tower Dire and Icarus Witch are welcomed exceptions. Cruz Del Sur Music has released some really good classic metal albums and “Songs From The Lost” is a worthy addition to that list. The album takes influence from NWOBHM and eighties hard rock and does a good job at it.

Thinks of bands like Crimson Glory, Queensrÿche and Iron Maiden. The catchy, blazing and almost cheerful melodies together with melodic guitar solos can do no wrong. Matthew Bizilia has a clean powerful voice that could’ve graced just about any classic metal album from the past with ease. The songs are well built and they have a very traditional feel in them. Some of them are heavier like “Written In The Stars” and some are slightly softer. “The Sky Is Falling” for example has some great clean guitars and “Nature Of The Beast” shows us how great and emotional singer Bizilia actually is. “Afterlife” shines with its magnificent guitar intro, “House Of Usher” sounds partly like it could’ve been taken from “Accident Of Birth” by Bruce Dickinson. Acoustic and beautiful “Smoke & Mirrors” closes the album and leaves you with relaxed feeling and a hunger for more.

There’s also a cover of “Mirror Mirror” which was originally done by Def Leppard back in 1981. It features quest vocals by Joe Lynn Turner and that should also tell you something about the moods “Songs From The Lost” dwells in. To be honest, it’s not all about classic traditional heavy metal, since there are also some bits or AOR here and there, but the songs are great and it’s all done with very good taste.

Icarus Witch is a very busy band. After releasing their debut “Roses on White Lace” EP in 2005 (see Archive CD/DVD reviews) the band also released their first full length album “Capture the Magic” (also on Archive CD/DVD reviews) back in 2006. Well here’s the band’s second full length album “Songs for the Lost” and the first positive thing that counts me after a few notes is the damn good production! Musically the band is sounding more Maiden-a-like than ever which is a compliment in my opinion! The band already proved their live qualitys during the 2006 edition of Germany’s best underground festival; Headbangers Open Air. Their typical US/Melodic powermetal still sounds very original even if they have a lot of Iron Maiden & Rainbow influences. On their debut album the band had some very fine guest appearances of George Lynch (Dokken) & Frank Aresti (Fates Warning). This time they ensnared no one less than Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen, HTP, etc.) to do a cover version of Def Leppard’s ‘Mirror Mirror’. All together a fine piece of US-metal with a lot of classic rock elements. I was a bit disappointed in their “Capture the Magic” album after their superb EP but with this new album they are back on the top and im sure this band will become great! Hope they will be picked up by a good professional promotor or get the chance to do a tour as support of a wellknown metal act soon! They deserve it!! 85/100

Mit ihrer zu Recht abgefeierten EP "Roses On White Lace" räumten ICARUS WITCH vor nun mittlerweile fast drei Jahren den Undergound quasi von hinten auf und lehrten so manch Alteingesessenen das Fürchten, denn diese Band ist talentiert und verdammt hungrig. Noch im selben Jahr folgte das Debüt-Album "Capture The Magic", das mich nach dem grandiosen Auftakt der EP allerdings ein wenig enttäuschte, denn obwohl die Songs durchweg Klasse beweisen, wirkt "Capture The Magic" als Gesamtwerk gesehen zu geschliffen und schlichtweg zu gleichförmig, denn entgegen der EP befindet sich auf diesem Longplayer keine einzige Up-Tempo-Nummer. Mit "Songs For The Lost" folgt nun das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, und setzt zunächst dort an, wo "Capture The Magic" aufhörte.

Auch auf diesem Longplayer hört man die Einflüsse von Bands wie IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, QUEENSRYCHE, RAINBOW, DIO, W.A.S.P. und MÖTLEY CRÜE heraus, doch ICARUS WITCH verstehen es trotz allem, ihren Songs einen eigenen unverkennbaren Stempel aufzudrücken und begeistern vor allem auch mit den Vocals von Matthew Bizilia, der mit seiner Stimme Wunder vollbringt. In einem Moment klingt Bizilia nämlich stark nach Bruce Dickinson, dann wieder nach Geoff Tate oder Vince Neil. Das gefällt mir ausserordentlich gut!

Mit dem flotten "Out For Blood" gibt das Album einen würdigen Einstand und ist mit einem wunderbaren Chorus ausgestattet, wobei die Band auf eindrucksvolle Art und Weise einmal mehr ihr Können beweist. Auch der nächste Track "Written In The Stars" bewegt mit seinem starken Bassspiel zu Begeisterungsstürmen, wirkt im Vergleich zum Opener jedoch um einiges gemächlicher. Die Halbballade "The Sky Is Falling" hat enormen Ohrwumcharakter, wobei das mächtig abrockende "Nature Of The Beast" ein wenig an OZZYs "No More Tears"-Album erinnert. Der geniale Mid-Tempo-Stampfer "Afterlife" zeigt schließlich noch einmal ganz deutlich das Talent der Gruppe für eigene Ideen und Arrangements. Bemerkenswert ist auch die Coverversion von DEF LEPPARDs "Mirror, Mirror", für die Joe Lynn Turner als Gastmusiker verpflichtet werden konnte und damit das Original sogar locker toppt!

Fazit: ICARUS WITCH liefern mit "Songs For The Lost" ein vielschichtiges und eingängiges Album ab, bei dem Fans der frühen Achtziger garantiert Freudentränen in den Augen haben werden. Dabei ist dieser Longplayer eine deutliche Steigerung zum Debüt und somit allen Freunden von Hard Rock, Heavy Rock und Heavy Metal wärmstens zu empfehlen! Autor: Jens
