Let's all imagine that we've died, and now we're sitting next to the architect of the universe. We can now modify the simulation we're currently living in and then experience it. What In Flames lineup would you choose to see live, if you could have 1 member, from any point in time, playing each instrument. For example:
Guitar 1: 2015 Bjorn
Guitar 2: 2025 Chris
Drums: 1994 Jesper
Bass: 1997 Johan
Vocals: 1994 Henke
You can even have the same guy playing multiple instruments, if that's your preference!

Not that easy of a call.. knowing that (imo) some of the members play/sound better than others. Some sound better at a different stage but maybe you'd rather see them at another point in time. Or maybe you would prefer a specific lineup in full because that's your favourite lineup, period. Maybe you want the 2003 lineup, exactly as it was, wearing the white clothing!

1999 lineup, the one year where Anders' vocals actually sounded the same as the most recent album they'd released (Colony). Also before the debacle with clean vocals started.

@eochaid.. cold as ice!!

Yeah @DE4life that's a good call. I saw that video (which was audio only really) of Coerced Coexistence that you shared from 1999 and that was so good. They were on fire there. If you have some other good ones to share please do.

I think I'd go with Jesper from 1999 on guitars, along with Chris since he can play anything. They'll I'd add Bjorn from 1997 on drums cause we have to include the guy, and Daniel is boring on drums live (sorry Daniel). Peter from late 90's or early 2000's on bass. Modern day Anders on vocals.

For sound, same lineup as now, but swap out Anders for Anders 1999 just for that extra energy (current Anders is still good imo).

For vibes, classic lineup circa 1999/2000.

He's the weak leg of the band. Has always been. But, with time, his lives have been consistently worse. And, seriously, he doesn't have the minimum required vocal skill for a professional band.

You know what's funny, when Phobiac posts now I always see the below:

Even if I haven't actually liked the post. Even weirder, when I click the names, it links to Here Until Forever on Youtube. WTF. Is someone trolling me?

It's weird enough that it does that, by why does it link to that song of all songs? It feels like the board software has become sentient and is trolling both of us considering our outspoken opinion on that song :heh:

There's a lot of live vids from 1999 on YouTube, or at least there were, from the band's tour of America that year. Some decent quality, some not so much, but if you search In Flames live 1999 on YouTube you should find plenty of material.

One of the better ones is the Montreal 1999 vid:

Great video and audio quality for the time period, and a fantastic set. The crowd reaction in 1999 versus recent times for Stand Ablaze is pretty sad though.

The video from 2000 is also cool, simply for the fact it captures a rare performance of ....As The Future Repeats Today. Quality is kind of shit, but hey, better than nothing.

I cannot think of a better song to do that though.

I remember @eochaid saying something like "when I read the lyrics it's more about Anders than his son" and, well, that's true  although Come Clarity arguably is as well. They're not so much songs for his children as songs about him that reference his children.

Yes. That's right. He's not talking about his song but how he feels about his song. Which is kind of a weird thing. I mean, he doesn't even care about the other person but about his own feelings.

Makes sense.
It's a tough call for me.. weighing out whether I'd prefer energy versus quality. I appreciate both a lot. It's so much fun when bands bring major energy and the crowd feeds off of it. Especially if you're right in the middle of it.

For me, it’d be:

Vocals- Anders (1997), those vocals and Come Clarity’s were peak for me, but Anders couldn’t pull off the vocals live in 2006, so ‘97 is my choice
Vocals- Daniel (1997), love his vocals in Sacrilege, it’ll always be a massive what if for me to hear him also doing vocals for IF
Guitars- Jesper, not sure when, I guess just whenever he was happiest touring
Guitars- Björn (I guess 2015 since he had the gray hair and a lot of energy, it’s still strange to me seeing what he used to look like since I got in late)
Guitars- Chris (2024), need the December Flower solo, and we’d have three guitarists so there could be harmonized leads and a rhythm section
Drums- Tanner (2024)
Bass- Peter (I guess 2016 as well since that’s what I’m more used to him looking like, but it doesn’t matter as much)

It’s the biggest pipe dream lineup ever, but if a band like Slipknot can have nine fucking guys on stage and have decent sound mixing, I can have this in my heart.

If I was going to look at general personas I'd probably stick with 1999 Anders and Jesper (Jesper seems genuinely enthused on the 1999 live vids, then progressively less so as time goes on). Bjorn, probably mid-2000s captain caveman Bjorn. He seemed a lot more comfortable and confident on stage then, compared to late 90s/early 00s, and probably the same for Daniel and Peter. I wouldn't mind throwing 96/97 Glenn in there as an additional guitarist if we're going pure fantasyland, just because he was integral to the TJR/Whoracle period and it'd be cool to see him on stage for those old school tracks.
