Stand Ablaze live

Okay, they got Speed to come out and sing the final chorus. Cool. Nice to hear somebody being able to do the chorus justice in a live setting. Also a nice callback of sorts to the music video.

If we can get Howard Benson out and someone like Roberto Laghi (SOAPF’s producer) in, we’ll be on our way with that. Wouldn’t fix the guitarwork as of recent, but it’s okay, Chris’ll lay down some immaculate solos.

Yeah, but realistically.. probably quite a bit of wishful thinking. They had good band members for Siren Charms (not sure about the producer, but it wasn't Benson), and look how that turned out. Anders buttfucked it. It's unlikely that he can be contained. What starts as a track with promise would most likely end up in the same boat as the others.

So the rabbit hole goes deeper than I expected. Daniel Bergstrand was actually the main producer from Reroute-SC (Excluding Come Clarity, where he just did minor parts of the engineering). Roberto Laghi was first in ASOP, surprisingly, but I distinctly remember him having major involvement in SOAPF, if not being the main producer. He was also part of SC’s production with Bergstrand, so I really don’t know how SoaPF was so well-produced surrounding two horribly produced albums. My guess is that he was the main producer for it while Bergstrand produced everything else for the band because it makes way too much sense that way.

I think Björn and Anders both shit the bed a bit for SC— They both had their moments of brilliance, as in 6/10 stuff, but I blame them both for its failure. A track like Dead Eyes should not have made it onto the album… Yet The Chase, the album’s best track by miles, was just a bonus track. Now that’s some bullshit.

I can only assume Anders had significantly more say in the production of SC than he did on SOAPF. It's hard to understand otherwise how largely the same team can produce such drastically different sounding albums. Even tracks that are more similar to SOAPF in composition - Rusted Nail, for example - don't sound right.

On the very next album we had a total change in the team producing and mixing, and for the first time there were people writing In Flames songs that were not a part of the band. You have to assume the generally negative reaction to SC knocked Anders and Bjorn's confidence. That's understandable, but it's a shame how they went about things afterwards.

It’s weird because Anders was the main producer on CC (Along with Björn and Jesper), and that turned out great. Maybe it’s the difference in material, years apart, etc., but if it was due to Anders or Björn on SC, then that’d be pretty wild.

Rusted Nail, for as flawed as its production is, also has a lot of little touches of care in its production, so I’ll always respect it a ton, even if I just don’t listen to it anymore.

I think it's just a case of the band going for two very different sounds on CC compared to SC. The former was very much metal, whereas the latter came about at a time when the band were moving away from metal. They just had no idea how to do it and ended up creating a mess - in all ways, whether it was composition or production. Anders knows how to produce metal, he's got that experience, but he didn't know how to produce whatever Siren Charms was meant to be. Maybe the old team didn't really know how either, and since that was the direction the band were going in, they decided to split and find a producer who could better produce what they wanted. Battles has the limpest and most pathetic production of any In Flames album, but it arguably suits the music, which is also weak.

Ah well, the last setlists are back to the usual trash anyway (FFTG aside), so whatever. With that said...

Wut

You know what, it makes for a nice little callback to the Trigger and Rejection Role videos, which were made with each one’s respective band performing and the other acting as the sort of ‘antagonists’.

I just watched the performance, and weirdly enough, Strid only comes in for the last chorus— He’s not even on stage until then. Weird decision, but cool I guess.

Edit: Everything loaded weird on my end, you already said what I did about the video. Shit.

I feel like if I ever want to listen to a shitty pop metal album, a real Jersey Shore, classic Big Brother, or Real Housewives, of music, Battles is the perfect guilty pleasure. Otherwise, it’s one of the biggest piles of shit put out professionally. I will say though, with the way Anders’ vocals got by that point, the autotune was necessary, pop metal or not. That’s not something I should ever have to say.

It's funny because on most albums I can get past the production, even if it isn't great, but on Battles it actively pisses me off. Everything sounds so fucking feeble. Like, why even have guitars on the album if you're just going to drain all of the energy and power from them? With the best possible production Battles would still be garbage, but it just contributes in making a shit album even worse. It makes ASOP production sound godly in comparison, and that's a fucking mess as well.

Not sure if I can agree with ASOP’s production being better, but if it means I can continue hating on Battles, then I’ll agree.

I remember on at least some of the live shows from the late 90s Anders softened the lyrics around the 'committing suicide' section. Something like "Solitary life / It's just like suicide, to me / We are chasing the dream / In this promised world, you scare me / And now we stand ablaze (we stand ablaze) / I lost my place, in this vile place / We stand ablaze". Could be that he just forgot or didn't give a shit about the original lyrics, but I always assumed it was a conscious decision to not sing about literally killing oneself by fire. Interestingly, when they played it this time around they pretty much kept the original lyrics in tact, save for where Anders forgot a line or two.

The fucking staccato picking in Stand Ablaze is so fucking sick. We really didn't get enough of that. Whenever they did do it, it was awesome. Like in Lord Hypnos.
If In Flames or the halo effect could bring that back for some tracks, that would be much appreciated.
