Ideas for special effects on stage?

We used to fire pyro years ago in our shows, but after Great White's tragedy it is very dificult to get authorization to use fire and bombs.
We are thinking about other kind of visual effect to give our shows an improvement.
This would be for a humour/parody band (Spinal Tap, Bad News...), so every crazy idea is also welcome.

We used to fire confetti canons too, but as they contain a bit of powder, I don't know if venues and promotors will aprove it. Still we have 2 canons since 2005. I wonder if they will work yet.
