Hey all.
After having niggling issues with registering in the past, I finally made it onto here.
I'm basically just starting on getting into recording seriously and it looks like a lot of you guys really know your shit and I hope to learn a lot from here:rock:

G'day dude. Welcome.
Tell us abit more bout yourself, in a band? Which side of Melbourne are you from? Prefered styles?

There are afew Melbournites around here, some of us have collaborated in the past, so don't be shy.

To my fellow Melbournians who have posted thus so far, I'm Harry, lived in the western suburbs my whole life, went to high school in Williamstown and Newport and I reside in Altona Meadows, south western 'burbs, so if any Melbourne dudes live near by I honestly don't mind if people want to drop me a PM, grab my address and/ or phone number and want to jam.
I guess the first metal band I got into was Iron Maiden, but when I started to play electric guitar, it was the Bay Area thrash bands that really made me listen more closely to metal and I began to incorporate that into my playing.
Over time, I started to become more diverse with my taste, listening to everything from 70s prog rock, post hardcore, mathcore, some jazz fusion, death metal, progressive death metal, post rock, post metal and quite a few other stuff, but of course like many fellow Sneap forumites my heart is mainly in metal when it comes to listening and playing. Never really liked power metal so much though to be honest.
As you can see from my signature, I'm a 7 string player and have been a 7 stringer since March this year. Fortunately a reasonable understanding of theory meant I was able to start incorporating the 7th string fairly quickly into my both my rhythm and lead guitar approach. I'm sure as fuck no Jeff Loomis for technique and general awesomeness, but I am reasonably skilled on the instrument. I can play bass too, but it's definitely not my main thing.
Bands I'm loving right now include Nevermore, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, The Faceless, Protest the Hero, Isis, Pelican, maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, Sylosis, Agalloch, SikTh, OHM: (jazz fusion band that has former Megadeth guitarists Chris Poland on guitars, amazing stuff), Meshuggah, Gojira and In Flames.
Currently not in a band and haven't been since November last year since my drummer and bassist whom I'm still good friends with ultimately moved onto other interests and aspects of life so we had to call it a day unfortunately.

Wow dude, we're practically neighbours! I'm down in Point Cook at the Boardwalk (left off the freeway at Old Geelong Rd)!
I'm up for Bay Area Thrash, but must admit that Prog/ power is where my main time is spent in metal.

Taking a punt on your screen name here, you don't happen to be of European, specifically Balkan background do you?

You've got the Doom guy in your avatar - that's all I need to know! Welcome!

Lol yeah, I still really love the game, I play all the Doom engine games using the Doomsday source port so it runs on Windows Vista. I love how it all looks with OpenGL graphics and higher screen resolutions.

I do like Symphony X a fair bit though, but I feel it's because they really pushed the genre instead of doing the same old, plus Michael Romeo is just a kick ass guitarist, one of the better ones to grace the metal world IMO.
Also like Blind Guardian and a bit of Iced Earth from time to time, but otherwise the genre just doesn't do a lot for me. I should have said "most power metal doesn't do it for me" rather than "never really liked power so much to be honest" lol.
I do however, play a lot of melodic stuff, so I wouldn't have problems jamming with someone strongly into power metal.

Haha, I'm actually not of any Eastern European descent at all.
My father is ye olde Aussie/Anglo Saxon of First Fleet descend AFAIK although my mum is half Spanish/half Filipino so I actually think I look like a South American Hispanic dude as a result:lol
My last name is Hughes, same as the Merv and the Dave Hughes', not related to either of them though:lol:
The screen name is just because I have a weird thing for Russia as well as being partly an inside joke at another forum I go to between me and some other guys. I just used this screen name again since it's easier to get used to having the same screen name at forums rather than having a different one for each one.

Haha, fair enough.

BG and IE are definately some of my favourites too.
Blasting some Testament at the moment (the Gathering). That reminds me, I think it's almost a pre-requisite to be a Melbournite here and know of In Malices Wake. Great local, bay area inspired thrash band. Check them out on Myspace if you haven't already.

More Kayo Dot fans are always welcome :D:D:D:D
i felt like the only person on here who knew of them :(

currently listening to choirs of the eye as we speak

Choirs of the Eye is definitely one of the most brilliant albums I've had the pleasure to hear in the last 6 months. I wish I had discovered them earlier, such an amazing band.
