In Defense of Mick Mars

My fave Crue albums are, in this order:

Too Fast For Love
Shout At The Devil
Dr. Feelgood
Theater Of Pain
Girls Girls Girls
New Tattoo
Motley Crue
Generation Swine

It depends on what criteria you are going to use to rate a guitarist. Some people will rate them on technical and musical ability as well as musicianship. Some people with rate them on album sales of the band they are in. Some people will rate them on how much of the material they write.

Me? I rate musicians from a technical standpoint, but also keeping in mind that not EVERYTHING you write has to be some musical juggernaught of Bach proportions.

Having said that, Mick Mars wrote some cheesy assed shit. But he also wrote some VERY catchy stuff and it all worked in the framework of Motley Crue - so for that I have to give him some credit. His sound is also very unique.

In a nutshell, I would say Mick Mars is VERY good at what he does, but as far as musicianship and technical abilities, he's pretty low on the totem pole in the grand scheme of things. Same goes for Nikki Sixx...great catchy song writer, but from a bass-player's point of view and in the realm of musicianship, he's pretty weak.

That's my 2 cents...let the flaming begin for daring to tell it like it is...

The problem with Mars are Neil, Sixx and Lee

Really, I'm not a fan of MC (I like 2-3 songs). And I have heard a lot of bash on Mick, and frankly to me the guy has gave his best to the band. As far as I know he's not into porn home videos, constant rantings and brawling, bragging to be Gene Simmons part deux or anything so common in his bandmates. He goes, play and that's it.
Besides since I don't play guitar I respect the guy, because as bad as anyone can put him down, he's doing much better than I'll ever be and that's enough for me.

You're a class act, my man. I love Motley...always have....but I have always thought that Vince and Tommy were such IDIOTS outside of the band...Motley are really what killed hero worship in bands for me. I still love the music, but it's hard to think they're "cool" when they're killing people in drunken car wrecks or beating their wives...

I love Motley Crue. it doesnt matter if they are Tecniclly sound .... it doesnt matter that they have done 10 tons of drugs or beat their wives or killed ppl ... they were atleast at one point an ASSKICKING Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Band they werent Trying to be the SX of Hair Metal Nikki Sixx knew he couldnt play ... hahahah Basiclly I liked them because notmatter how abnormal they were they were always just a bunch of dirtbags just like me :) I could always Identifiy with them

Okay, this is only about the tenth time I have stated this but.......... Mick Mars is a technically deficient guitarist who should be even more famous than he is. When Motley Crue released "Kickstart My Heart" as a single, and Mick did his car racing sound tremelo stuff, at the second "waaaaaaaah" I said to myself, "that is the new Motley Crue" song. It was at that point, I realized Mick might not be technically inventive, but his style is his own and completely unique. Mick is in my top twenty of all time and I will never be embarrassed to say that.

I think Motley is one of those few bands where every single member is vitally important because each member's personality & character comes through so strong in the music and creates the Motley sound.

 I don't agree with that, Vince probably, but not Lee & Sixx.
These guys write the songs, Vince just ruins them...
I saw two interviews with Tommy Lee on TV recently Larry King Live & 20/20.
I think he has finally mellowed out. I even heard him on the Stern Radio show, never, ever has he been so laid back & reserved. Maybe that time in jail did him good? I haven't bought his book yet, but I hope to get it for x-mas or my b-day...
