29 minutes, 48 seconds. That’s exactly how long INSISION take to slice into your skull and instill it with their most punishing brand of death metal on their latest release, Beneath the Folds of Flesh. And they don’t need a second more. “World Impaled” leads the slaughter nicely with an extremely catchy riff and vocals in the vein of INCANTATION, IMMOLATION, or maybe even NILE, really deep and guttural. There are a lot of SUFFOCATION style breakdowns too, that just lay waste with monstrous grooves. Check out the drums that bring in the next track, “Trapped Within.” Excellent. In fact, the drum work on this album is damn near as good as my favorite drum cd of the 2002, MASTODON’s Remission.

While it would be nice to get a lyric sheet from the wonderful people at Earache/Wicked World for releases like this, I’m actually content with my cardboard sleeved promo, as the music is that fucking good. Guess you will have to be the judge on lyrical content! While a lot of their contemporaries just grind away for what seems an eternity, INSISION manage to throw a lot twists, jags, and just an all out assault on the senses. “My Fever” has a twisted little riff that Trey Azagthoth would be proud of, and one of my favorite tracks, “Before My Altar,” is full of all kinds of nice little surprises. If you’re a fan of the brutal and sometimes technical side of death metal, you really should check out INSISION, they might just be what you’re looking for. I know I was pleasantly surprised.
