Interesting but probably quite pointless question

Why is it that metal and hard rock in general don't lend themselves to the kind of lyrics I most like to listen to?

I've always admired people like Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters and Sting, who put a lot of ideas and imagery into their words and are meticulous about the way they write them. It's difficult to imagine any of those guys singing about dragons and rainbows, charging across a battlefield at dawn to defend the honour of your clan or seducing a groupie backstage after a concert.

I'm not saying the genres have no clever lyricists at all. Neil Peart and Geezer Butler and Geoff Tate are always thought-provoking, Alice Cooper and Ian Gillan are both very good at tongue in cheek wordplay and our old friend Mr. Dickinson often has a foot in either camp.

Does anyone see the point I'm trying to make here or am I just rambling? It's Sunday afternoon and my brain's on autopilot :).

Heavy music doesnt lend itself to much other than death and destruction, just as Paul Simon would sound silly singing about Satan taking over the world, metal would be a bit silly singing come on people now, shine on your brother, everybody get together try to love on another right now :)

Also, I think there are plenty of brilliant lyricists in metal, just as many as any other genre.

Hahahaha I own System X! Its crap from what I remember... Troops would love its lyrics.

The cover was brilliant too, a big black X. Which Def Leppard would go on to rip off.

What are System X lyrics like?

Anyway I love hard rock lyrics coz they are fun and full of attitude. I'd much rather hear a song about high heels & big boobs than something thought provoking but that's just me

Oh didn't notice that link :)

She's A Night Time Lover, Rock & Roll Heroes & Falling In Love With A Stranger's lyrics are pretty good hehhe. The rest kinda suck though. How preachy does Perfect Crime wanna be? And United We Stand should be on The Glorious Burden.

There is plenty of deep thought provoking lyrics and music in metal, you just need to look for it and get the old stereotypes out of your head. As Wenda has said, even Megadeth have some deep lyrics. Check out some prog and I am sure you will find something with more meaning than high heels and big boobs, as Troops put it.

As for the lyrics to 'United We Stand', I thought 'When The Eagle Cries' was bad.....for shame.

Big Boobs by Metal Shop certainly does have thought provoking lyrics. It provokes alot of thought when I listen to it.

"I see your boobies and I wanna screw, lookin' at you makes my balls turn blue
I wanna see you in a little bikini, wrappin' your boobs around my fat WEENIE!"

:headbang:

The outro especially has some pretty powerful moments I think. The emotion with which Michael belts out those final lines is amazing...

"Big Boobs! Holy shit!"
Big Boobs! Look at those tits!
Big Boobs! They're really really big!
Big Boobs! Boobies boobies boobies!
Big Boobs! Boobies boobies boobies!"

Yeah Blitzy...the trick with prog is finding ones which don't try too hard to be thought-provoking and intelligent and end up being pretentious :p I like Threshold's recent couple of albums, Hypothetical and Critical Mass, but their first album Wounded Land was fucking awful lyric-wise. Listening to that is like reading an extreme-leftwing socialist newspaper.
