Is defragging a drive with audio files on it bad?

I've read some stuff about how Avid doesn't recommend this , and on some other forum they even said it can negatively impact the quality of the files or something (IIRC). Just wondering is there any truth to this or is it fine to defrag drives with audio on them?

In the Cubase 5 manual they highly recommend you defrag, so I'd say yes, do it.

I did recently in the hope it'd clear up a few audio glitches, but I think it's more of a CPU/RAM problem.

it can negatively impact the quality of the files

Bullshit.
On the HDD it is just 1s and 0s and just like when copying a file - it literally CAN'T make an error when defragging (unless the drive is faulty, has bad sectors etc. but even then error correction/protection will take care of that most of the time).

You better stop cheating on AS forum with that "some other forum"! ;)
