As others have replied, yes it can be coupled to a synth. You can even buy a guitar by Roland that is synth ready. As far as an effect..... eh I can make my guitar sound weird with my GNX4 but I basically have a $600 chorus/delay effect with that because I typically only use effects on clean guitar parts less than a little reverb.
