I've got about $600 available to buy some monitors

If you have $600 then you can buy any pair of the $500 monitors brand new. There are a lot of great ones out there - Event TR8, KRK RP-8, Yamaha HS80, M-Audio BX8a.... All are actually decent monitors. I don't know what usually goes for $600 used so I'm no help there...

Just a caution, you never know what you are getting when you buy used. You could be buying somebody else's problems, or you could have found a steal on a great pair...but you won't know until you test them out. With eBay you can't test monitors out. This is why I suggested buying any of the many $500/pair actives brand new.

i completely agree with 006. definetely would not get monitors of all things used. seems likely that they would be broken more often than say a mic pre used. i have m audio bx8as and they are amazing. just get some new monitors. ive also heard millions of good things about the hs80s.

i 2nd the bx8a, i used to use them, they were quite good once you learned them, i had a $1000 and spent $500 on the bx8a and $500 on acoustic treatment(DIY Mineral Wool Panels, 18 x 4"x2'x4').

so the sub $1000 monitors can be very good and usefull, but only if you give more time to learning them to your ears and your room, with acoustic treatment you take the room factor out and makes things easier.

I'm in the same boat and i think I'm going with the Yamaha's personally. I have yet to really hear anything bad about them. Plus they just look like the Yamaha ns10's which is always cool.

Hmm, look is about the only similarity though from what I've read - not bad sounding speakers, but I found the HS80s to be pretty hyped in the lows compared to Dynaudio BM5A's (the best speaker available for me to compare with, and really highly regarded) and the HS50s to be totally castrated in the lows. But I do want the NS10 "spotlight" effect on my mixes, which is why I'm going for MSP7's, which were designed by the NS10 dude, and apparently much more true to the design.

There isn't a speaker on the market sub $2k that comes close in my opinion.

I know...it isn't marketed as a "studio monitor" and I'm glad. If it was marketed as a studio monitor it'd probably be five times the price.
