He did ruin his career. Watching him cut any sort of promo at all, or even step into a wrestling ring is just embarrassing. I know a lot of the 70's and 80's guys don't age well and generally look like shit... but this guy takes the cake. I'd be surprised if he even knows what a DDT is anymore.
