Jam Handy Hidden Bone & Hidden Gristle
Audio Savant 2005
By Russell Garwood
After a problem burning the promo, I only seem to have the first seven tracks of this release, but I can certainly see a pattern building up. Every track feels like an introduction, consisting of a huge variety of samples, usually spoken word, subsequently looped, masticated, sped up, slowed down, and any other of a myriad of effects on display here. Under this we often find some minimalistic electronica, in most places seemingly comprised of more samples. This is a very interesting approach, and the music Jam Handy gets from random samples proves entertaining listening, especially in the carefully chosen and edited words.
While Hidden Bone & Hidden Gristle is completely unlike anything Ive heard before, and as such is certainly worthy of merit, I cant help but feel it lacks something. Because of its very nature, the album creates good background music, but is less accessible if listened to on headphones. Well constructed, and skilfully edited, this is worth checking out for fans of the bizarre and unusual, but those after more musical experimentation may want to avoid it.
