Episode #98 of The Metallica Report is now available. Listen at Spotify here, and below.
Description: James and Robert answer a couple of listener questions, addressing their influences, inspiration, and where life might have taken them if they weren’t in Metallica. We also hear the third instalment of the DanLoad from Dan Nykolayko, this week exploring the DVDs in the back-breakingly gargantuan Load (Remastered) Deluxe Box Set.
When a fan from Denmark asks what Robert and James would be doing if they didn’t play in Metallica, and Metallica didn’t exist, Trujillo answers, “That’s a good question. I would probably continue to play music. I love songwriting, so I always write songs, even just for fun, you know, it’s something that I do. So maybe I would get into songwriting, become an independent songwriter, may get into production. The other thing that I actually originally started to do, my first job was in construction, so I always thought that maybe I would become a contractor. I think that my skills as a organizer, a coordinator could help. I don’t like lifting heavy things anymore, back in the day I could lift a couple of sheets of drywall, no problem, up three flights of stairs. I did drywall, I did hardwood floors for a long time. Learning that stuff was great, because now if I see a fixer upper property or a house, I’m not afraid of it. I always see the potential of it because I’ve done that on my own, and I’ve experienced that. So I’m not afraid to remodel or rebuild. Probably be a contractor, something in the trades, I’d be a tradesman of sorts.”
Hetfield answers the same question: “I’d be trying to form Metallica, still, probably. Still looking for a Lars somewhere out there. Or, I would really be involved in bands. I’d be roadie-ing or working in a studio, hopefully helping make music somehow. Or, graphic design I love. I love graphics, I love doing artwork and I also like doing trades stuff, you know craftsmanship with wood, with metal, building stuff. Maybe that would have turned into something too. But music is the gift I’ve been given, so I’d still be trying to kick some doors down and get into it somehow.”
Metallica, who recently announced the upcoming remastered reissue of Load, originally released on June 4, 1996, shared the following update last week:
“November 16, 1996: As the European leg of the Poor Touring Me was winding down, we found ourselves in Stockholm for a two-night run at Globen. It’s a raw counterpoint to the seminal concert film, Cunning Stunts, edited together by Brett Murray from a stack of videotapes collecting dust in the Metallica Vault.
“See the full concert shot at the second show in Stockholm as part of the Load Remastered Deluxe Box Set, coming out on June 13. While you wait, watch a full performance of ‘Bleeding Me’ now.”
