Checked out LaBrie's album earlier. It would be a decent album - a downtuned affair similar to his last one, but I counted 4 songs without growling.

Growling and blast-beats have become as big of a cliche in metal as rhyming "brain" and "insane" or "fire" and "desire".

Seriously? Yuk. Wouldn't expect his solo albums to be like that. But to be honest I'd never listen to them because his voice grates on me after a while... But still, I'd have expected cheesy ballads to be more his style!

Exactly the reasons for:

a) I'm not going to get the album,
b) Dream Theater sounds like crap in many songs since "Train Of Thought" and specially in the last two releases and,
c) The real reason Mike Portnoy left the band

i'm slightly :zombie:

are you saying mike left just because of james voice or are you talking about the blast beats and growls? if you are talking about the latter mike was the one growling and putting blast beats in dream theater tunes

i'll probably check it out...the song they had released earlier from it, (forget what it was called, one more time or something?) sounded killer.

but i could see how a whole album, especially if the music isnt as good as the single, could get redundant or annoying.

yea james's solo stuff is rather weird

Not that much. The first two albums are decent progressive metal, then something happened and he lost track of the thing and decided to get more alternative, experimental, whatever but pretty much yucky.
