Awesome was exactly the word I was thinking of when I saw this thread.

Gamma Ray did indeed rocked the house last night. Into Eternity also played an incredible set featuring previews of some of the songs on their upcoming album. Division was also great. (Thanks again to Mike and the guys in Division for hooking me up with a ticket.)

Heres a fews pics from last night for those of you who could not attend. Sorry if they're a little dark. (I'll be posting more to my blog on myspace later tonight or tomorrow if you want to check them out.):

Cool pics. Was Kai wearing a knit hat?

Yes Kai was wearing a knit hat, had it on all night at the NYC show that I attended  My fiancee and I did a short interview with Kai and got a lot of pics from the photo pit. They'll be up on our site www.metalfury.com in a few days. I'll let everyone here know when the pics are up. As a matter of fact, I'm going to start working on getting them on the site now...

Nope. About 350, and over 100 no-shows, which I can't quite figure out...

Thanks for taking pics, Bobbie, and it was a pleasure to meet you. Glad you enjoyed the show!

Only 350 at the show?????

Is this Allen? If so, nice meeting you, and glad you enjoyed the show...

If not, glad you enjoyed the show anyway. ;)

Wow, only 350? That is a surprisingly low turnout.
I don't get how bands like Dragonforce sell out , but GR gets a poor turnout.

A few years back when Helloween toured with Jag Panzer, the turnout in Chicago was rather dismal as well....

Do the young kids look at bands like Helloween and Gamma Ray and consider them to be just "old bands" that they wouldn't relate to?

I was talking to some very young kids at a Haunted show a few years back, and I had mentioned that I was a huge Manowar fan. No joke, one of the guys asked, "Manowar? Aren't they classic rock"???

Over a hundred no-shows? On $25 tickets? Man, I care about my money more than that...

I think to the tip to meeting Kai is get there early. He was out back at 5:30 when I was waiting to load in, signing everything put in front of him. Very gracious man.

Yes Mike this is Allen good seeing you bud and the show kicked major ass in my book!!!!Yea we where there early and security screwed with me right before Gamma Ray finished soundcheck!!! At least it happened but was not easy we all know Gamma doesnt hit these shores as often as we would like!!!!

Short answer: Yes. There's some younger ones who get into the older bands, but there's such a generation jump (the whole 90s is a wasteland for melodic metal/power metal, form a fan perspective) that you see a lot more kids at something like Sonata Arctica or Dragonforce. Ticket prices and the shows being stacked right on top of each other didn't help...

Good call on Sonata Arctica.
I was surprised by how many younger kids were at the Sonata show in Chicago (which is great BTW!!)
Then at Chicago Powerfest, it was a MUCH older crowd (for bands like Nocturnal Rites and Lefay).

I made the trip from NC to the show - it was well worth it.

My buddy could not make the trip, so he accounted for 1 no-show, though that doesn't nearly explain the other 99 no-shows.

Though the crowd was small, the floor was very energetic.

I thought Gamma Ray at Jaxx was awesome although not as strong (at least in terms of sound) as they were at ProgPower. I was suprised at a few omissions from the setlist but I liked hearing some of the newer stuff.

As far as Division, I promised I would check you guys out but I didn't make it until 10:30. I just couldn't sit through another Into Eternity set..I just couldn't. I will make it a point to see you all (again) sometime down the road. :(

Been lurking for a little while, but figured this is the time to make my debut :)

I got a few good pics of that show myself. I have many more, but to same a little time and space, I picked out 9 of my fovarites. I do also have pics of Division and Into Eternity as well (for another topic). I did not get any of Timelord, as I got there kinda late (thanks to work and traffic).

But I agree with eaeolian on this one. Between the ticket prices and the shows stacked up on each other. I am going to Dragon Force on tommorrow, and then Spock's Beard (gotta get Matt from Odin's Court to "will-call" me a ticket) on Saturday, and then Nevermore/Evergrey on Sunday (and again get to see Division :) ). But than after this week, I really did not see anything I was really interested in until the Kamelot/Epica show in September. Sorry, just not into all that death/thrash metal that they got lined up pretty much all through June and July.

But anyway, check out these pics I took myself at the Gamma Ray show:

Actually, that's above average for shows like this at Jaxx. The "old" bands only draw 200-250 usually. The "new" bands usually sell out or come close to it. Kamelot only did 200 last time they were there (or a little more). Helloween did about 250 last time they were here. Etc. Then Sonata Arctica, Dragonforce, etc. will sell out.
