John Carpenter Appreciation Thread

Ill give em a try, Im not above horror movies, I just never got into them. Sounds like I have some good recommendations.
Well then, start with The Thing. Otherwise, note that there is a whole world of horror movies out there, and a whole bunch of them deserve viewing way before some of Carpenter's stuff.

Let's see, so far we've had remakes of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, DAWN OF THE DEAD, AMITYVILLE HORROR, THE GRUDGE amongst many others and now comes word that Revolution plans on remaking John Carpenter's THE FOG. Can a remake of KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE be far off? The good news though is that Carpenter is involved in this current incarnation of his classic 1980 film so there is hope. The original film followed the events of a thick fog that rolled in to a Northern California town bringing with it the ghosts of a bunch of seamen (hehe, I said seamen) who had died as the result of a similar fog 100 years back. Cooper Layne (THE CORE) is writing the script and while Carpenter won't direct the remake he will be involved creatively with the project. And getting back to the aforementioned glut of horror remakes, Carpenter says he's even contemplating remaking horror icon HALLOWEEN. HALLOWEEN!! Is nothing sacred? Next thing you know they'll want to get Freddie Prinze, Jr. to star in a remake of THE SHINING. The studio is looking to get started filming in February prepping for a Halloween 2005 release. Another Carpenter remake, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 with Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne, will hit theaters next year (the trailer will debut in front of AFTER THE SUNSET on November 12th).

Interesting isn't it?

Chainsaw Massacre
Dawn of the Dead
The Fog
etc.

All these films are cult horror classics. They are so highly regarded because they were made for genre fans by genre fans. Tobe Hooper, George Romero, John Carpenter once did it all for the love of the movie, the scare, the script, the music - getting the job done right, sleepless nights, no money, scrambling to make the deadline. Hunger!!

Now the remakes are just rebranding something to revisit that success with a new audience. Big budget, safe bets. One version doesn't detract from the other (indeed I like the Ring and Dawn remakes), but I WOULD URGE YOU TO GO SEE THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THE FOG BEFORE THE REMAKE!!!1

I still need to rent The Fog. Might do it this weekend. Yeah, it's cool those guys made those movies because they wanted to create something, not for the money. Now we have shameless remakes (re-releases) trying to cash-in o the name while throwing some big-name actors in there.

Kinda reminds you of the metal biz. Band releases album out of love for music. It hits "classic" status. Greedy label re-releases said album with "bonus tracks", "new artwork", "words from the band". Meh.....

here's a good horror movie news site with good reviews: http://www.joblo.com/arrow/

and sticking to the John Carpenter theme:

The luscious ladies over at Suicide Girls – tattoos, piercings, and um…open minds, what’s not to love – have laid out a chat with good ole’ Frank “I adapt Stephen King novels” Darabont. Much of the interview deals with THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, but he also drops a couple of tasty tidbits regarding his involvement in THE THING with the Sci-Fi Channel:

It’s not a remake as much as it is a miniseries sequel to the great John Carpenter movie. It got reported in the trades as a remake but I would not want to remake a movie as good as John Carpenter’s. But to do a loving sequel as a miniseries really does appeal to me. Then you’re not screwing up somebody’s great movie…(Picking up at the end of the Carpenter version) is my hope. We’ll see if the studio lets me get away with it [laughs]. That would be my ideal situation… No (director yet) but we’re hashing out the story at the moment and we should have a screenplay done pretty soon.

So get ready to go back to arctic isolation, constant danger from your “friends”, and gore galore! Having loved, loved, LOVED Carpenter’s version, I can’t wait to see the blood flow when they tap this vein again.

Oh yeah baby, that would rule! Well, the idea is a good one anyway. The Thing left you hanging a bit...makes for good beer discussion. Like for example, notice that when the two last guys are talking at the end, you can only see the 'breath' in the cold air from one of them. That was either really well done, or just camera angles hiding this by coincidence.

You must see The Fog. Hopefully you'll rent a DVD version as opposed to an old VHS tape. I'm sure the DVD version is uncut. Either way, the whole film is so 'Carpenter', it rules all the way.
