Yeah, believe it or not it was happening, there was a protector of aborigines in every state who was the legal guardian of every aboriginal child. They used to take them off to missionaries where they were "trained" to act like white people and the ones that were not as black as the other ones were partnered with white people and were not allowed to interact with the black population anymore. The theory behind it was that the "full blooded" tribal aboriginie's would be unable to sustaine themselves and would be doomed to extinction. It occured between 1915 and officially 1969 (though the main practices stopped before then).
